Was It Good?

It’s a significant improvement over previous issues. (read out SACRED SIX #6 review here). SACRED SIX suffers from trying to tell too many stories with too many characters all at once. Couple the confusion with Priest’s erratic storytelling style and the result is convoluted noise.

However, this issue is significantly better because the focus is narrower (Nyx) and the storytelling style is not as erratic. There are some not-so-great moments, but issue #7 is moving the series in the right direction.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

We begin with storytime. Nyx recounts her origins from conception in the 16th century to assuming her role as a half-human fire demon working for her father, the Devil. Her job throughout the centuries largely consisted of mayhem and destruction as her father directed.

Cut to present day Ashthorne, and the original Draculina has arrived with Stan the demon in mouse form to unravel what happened to Lilith. As they trade insults and snark, Zylaven’s magic kicks in and transforms Draculina into… a little girl. The disguise presumably will allow Draculina to roam around Ashthorne unnoticed.

What’s helpful about this scene is the amount of exposition Priest throws in to summarize the story up to this point. Draculina, newly introduced to the plot, acts as the reader stand-in so if you’re significantly lost, listen to Stan the Demon.

Back to the cabin from last issue’s cliffhanger, Drago returns to find Vampirella mauled by Pantha. He rushes her to the hospital in Sacred where he uses his vampiric influence on the medical staff to get her the attention her alien vampire physiology needs.

Meanwhile, Nyx and Chastity are busy trying to hotwire a truck to get out of Ashthorne. After some strange interactions with the locals, Draculina (in little girl form) approaches them to lend a hand with her expert knowledge of pickup truck electrical systems. Stan the demon can’t help keeping his mouth shut, and Nyx and Chastity figure out the little girl is not what she seems.

In the last scenes of the book, a local little vampire girl is roaming the town. Her mother’s been looking for her, and just as she catches up to the girl, a vampire slayer doing his best Blade impersonation arrives on a motorcycle to cut their immortal lives very short.

Based on the ending, it’s clear all parties are set to converge for a messy showdown in the streets of Ashthorne. If it seems there’s not much meat to this review, it’s because there’s not much forward progress on the story. Plenty of backstory (Nyx) and helpful exposition (Stan to Draculina), but everything else is chess pieces moving into position on the board.

Final Thoughts

SACRED SIX #7, available from Dynamite Comics on February 17th, 2021, teaches you a lot about Nyx, brings Draculina up to speed, a brings a dangerous new player into town. This is a nice breather issue to bring new readers on board, but not a lot happens. Still, the art is great and the arc is moving in the right direction for a clear, engaging story.

Score: 7.5/10
