Is It Good?
ROBYN HOOD: DAGON continues Zenescope’s Year of Lovecraft with a solid adventure in (and under) the streets of NYC, where Robyn Hood and her allies are forced to confront the evil forces aligned with the imminent return of the Old Ones to Earth. Filled with energetic action and the introduction of a new hero (maybe?), there’s a lot to like in this issue. That said, the plot acts as a transition issue more than a complete story, so you’ll have to wait for future stories to see how it plays out.
What do we mean by “transition issue”? That means much of what happens in this comic won’t make sense if you haven’t been reading the previous Robyn Hood one-shots and the Grimm Fairy Tales series. This issue mostly stands on its own, but there is enough connective tissue related to other happenings in the Zenescope Universe that a new reader may find parts of this issue confusing.
Joe Brusha’s script revolves around Robyn Hood attempting to take a well-earned day off when an old ally stops by, claiming to have visions about an evil threat in the sewers below. If you’re a Lovecraft fan, you already know the aquatic monster, Dagon, is related. However, Dagon doesn’t appear in this issue, and its influence/presence is barely a factor. You could argue the title is misleading, which may be a down point for some readers.
That said, this issue is jam-packed with action, monsters, guest appearances, and a soft cliffhanger that promises more in the near future. On that count, you get your money’s worth when it comes to a comic with plenty of meat on its bones.
Mariani and Rodriguez also deliver a fine set of visuals to keep your eyeballs entertained. The monster designs are spot-on, as in consistent with Lovecraft lore, the threats are bigger than Robyn can handle on her own, and a promising new hero looks like a welcome addition to the Zenescope library in terms of style and powers. In all, the art team did a great job.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Robyn Hood strolling to her local diner to enjoy a cheat day on a well-deserved day off. Before she can get an order in, Robyn is approached by Jeb, the man who helped her during the recent Wendigo attack, and Keres, the Goddess of Death, to warn of a great evil in the sewers. Robyn goes along with their warnings, and the trio staves off an attack by Dagon’s gillmen in the sewers below NYC.
Jeb, an average mortal, almost gets killed by the gillmen, but Keres notices special strength within Jeb that simply needs to be unlocked. Using her dark powers, Keres releases the strength within Jeb, turning him into Ghosthawk, a powerful shaman warrior. Now, the two heroes and a goddess, the trio sets out to the museum to retrieve a powerful artifact before it falls into the hands of the allies of the Old Ones.
We conclude the issue with a dragon (not a Dagon), a witch, and a portal.

Final Thoughts

ROBYN HOOD: DAGON gives you plenty of story for your money with exciting action, meaningful developments in the larger Lovecraft saga, a cool, new hero, and tidbits promising more to come. That said, this is a transition issue that may have some confusing bits if readers aren’t up to speed on the other Grimm titles.
