Is ROBOTECH: RICK HUNTER #2 Good?
ROBOTECH: RICK HUNTER #2 slows down the urgency and expands the lore when Pegasus Squadron arrives at New Guinea in Brandon Easton’s latest chapter. Written more as a love letter to Captain Gloval and the desire for peace, Robotech fans will enjoy the deep cuts and backstory, but new readers may tune out.
When last we left Rick Hunter, Pegaus Squadron’s trip to New Guinea was interrupted by an ambush by a squad of rogue Zentraedi. Pegasus weathered the attack, but not without losses. Now, Pegagus arrives at their destination and makes plans to hunt down the rogue Zentraedi’s hiding place, but not before Hunter relays a story or two about Captain Gloval’s part in the first Human/Zentraedi wedding.
To be clear, you get plenty of story in this issue, but a fair bit of the plot is devoted to building novel developments in the First Robotech War. You learn how different groups eventually learned to accept or hate the Zentraedi, and you come to appreciate Captain Gloval’s commitment to peace as he does his duty as a military leader.
What’s great about ROBOTECH: RICK HUNTER #2? Brandon Easton’s world- and character-building make for exciting and heartwarming information for Robotech fans. Easton seems committed to adding to the lore without changing the details or the spirit of the mythology. If you’re a die-hard RoboTech fan, especially of Captain Gloval, you’ll like this issue.
What’s not so great about ROBOTECH: RICK HUNTER #2? If you’re a casual or new fan, there’s a good chance you’ll be bored to tears. Without a frame of reference for who Captain Gloval is or why he’s important to the Robotech mythology, the extensive flashbacks are the equivalent of your grandpa telling random war stories not involving combat.
How’s the art? Ragazzoni’s art looks great, and it’s fair to say, the art looks far superior to the original RoboTech trades on the market. The character designs and figure work are distinctive, and the only sky battle is packed with detail and energy.

What’s ROBOTECH: RICK HUNTER #2 About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our ROBOTECH: RICK HUNTER #1 review to find out what happened after the first rogue Zentraedi attack.
We begin with the Pegasus Squadron recovering from the Zentraedi ambush near Micronesia. Once the civilians are secured, the team continues their flight to New Guinea while mourning the loss of Castillo. Pegasus makes it to New Guinea without further interference, giving them time to rest, reload, and meet groups from the Army of the Southern Cross.
While Pagsus prepares, they learn just how deep the hatred for Zentraedis goes among the Southern Cross soldiers, and Rick Hunter chats with his subordinates about his dealings with Captain Gloval. The Captain was an inspiring military leader, but he was also a proponent of love and peace. Hunter relayed an example of the Captain’s peaceful leadership when the Captain provided support for the first Human/Zentraedi wedding, even acting as the presiding minister.
We conclude the issue with a relaunch, an attack, and more losses.

ROBOTECH: RICK HUNTER #2 expands the history and character details of one of the more famous Robotech characters while the Pegasus Squadron continues its mission to hunt down rogue Zentraedi. The character-building is a treat for longtime RoboTech fans, and the art is solid, but new or casual readers may be bored with this issue.
