Analysis of REVOLUTION 9 #4:

Plot:

Velveteen joined forces with the hapless hacker Jasper Dean at the end of Revolution 9 #3, learning the Order of Nine is a ruthless criminal organization that won’t stop to protect its secrets. Now, Velveteen implements a plan by sending a message to the Order that Jasper is willing to sell his silence in exchange for a lot of cash and the delivery of Volta to Velveteen. The Order agrees on both counts. The issue ends with Velveteen and her friends paying Volta an explosive visit.

Artwork and Presentation:

Carlos Reno sends the final issue of the arc off in style with explosions aplenty, tense shootouts, and excellent details to bring the readers into this homage of 80s/90s action flicks.

Character Work:

Writer Mark London completes Velveteen’s ascension from badass assassin who takes orders to badass rebel out for revenge with ease and satisfying simplicity. Once she hatches her master plan, readers are fully on her side.

Structure:

The plot, setting up a backroom deal with the Order, is almost too simplistic until you find out what happens on the last page. The realization that Velveteen’s troubles are far from over is the stuff that bigger and better sequels are made of.

Strongest Point(s):

The strongest point of this issue, above and beyond the excellent artwork, is the oh so satisfying comeuppance Volta gets for the years of betrayal he visited upon Velveteen. Karmic justice is the best kind of justice.

Weakest Point(s):

There’s a sequence involving the landmines out of Vulta’s compound that looks cool but doesn’t make a lot of sense. You’d have to assume that there would be enough security to notice somebody is planting land mines in your driveway, even if it is a lengthy one.

Final Thoughts:

REVOLUTION 9 #4 brings the arc to a close when Velveteen executes a risky plan to get revenge. Mark London’s homage to 80s/90s action thrillers hits all the right marks, and the art team’s execution is dead-on (no pun intended).

Score: 8.5/10
