Analysis of REVOLUTION 9 #3:

Plot:

Revolution 9 #3 picks up in the middle of the cliffhanger from the previous issue. Velveteen fights her way through an abandoned hospital against Thorn’s mercenaries. She grabs the kid and makes a beeline for an old friend, Vincent. Unfortunately, Sandeman gets to Vincent first and tortures him for Velveteen’s location. The issue concludes with Velveteen taking the high ground, a valid attempt to change hearts and minds, and the plan that connects Revolution 9 with Exit City.

Artwork and Presentation:

Carlos Reno has the unenviable task to deliver a non-stop action fest that shows Velveteen taking out scores of soldiers in impressive and believable ways. In short, the action choreography and figure work has to be excellent, and it is.

Character Work:

Writer Mark London continues building out Velveteen’s personality as a killer with a heart, but this issue does something a little extra. Rather than bogging Velveteen down with a morality crisis when her persuasive words don’t get through to Sandeman, Velveteen chooses the efficient path. You don’t see that choice much these days, and it makes Velveteen that much more special.

Pacing:

As all action-heavy comics should, London kicks Revolution 9 #3 on a kinetic note and holds that speed almost all the way through. You won’t check your watch or the page count once in this issue.

Strongest Point(s):

This highlight of Revolution 9 #3 is the satisfying outcome and the well-executed action. If you’re a fan of John Wick-styled storytelling, there’s a lot to like in this series.

Weakest Point(s):

The pace and sheer volume of action leave little room to explore the Order, which is the central antagonist. Sure. There may be room for a follow-up or a continuation in the pages of Exit City, but it’s hard to see how the next issue can fully wrap up the story. File this critique under “mild concern.”

Final Thoughts:

REVOLUTION 9 #3 is a John Wick-styled action fest from start to finish. Writer Mark London and artist Carlos Reno deliver a beautifully choreographed symphony of destruction as Velveteen fights to escape an ancient order of assassins.

Score: 8.5/10
