Analysis of RESURGENCE #4:
First Impressions:
Writer Fred Van Lente brings in the last piece of the puzzle in Resurgence #4 to prepare for next month’s “explosive” finale. Readers looking for wild twists, unexpected character moments, and the promise of a big finale will have a lot to like in this issue.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left the latest incarnation of Unity in Resurgence #3, the soldiers aboard B.O.B. separated over ideological lines. Eidolon faced Ninjak while Bloodshot faced Rai, and General Capshaw chose a deadly option for several Valiant characters by setting off an explosion aboard the space station.
In Resurgence #4, Livewire, Quantum & Woody, and Faith pilot an alien shuttle to orbit to reach B.O.B. before something bad happens. Unfortunately, they arrive too late to save General Capshaw, but the assortment of Valiant characters find a tenuous way to stay alive long enough for a rescue. Unfortunately (again), the alien shuttle isn’t equipped to do much more than buy the survivors a few minutes.
To be honest, it’s not clear how or why an alien spaceship was hanging up in the National Museum, why it was so poorly guarded, or how Livewire knew she could use it to get to orbit, but here we are. The setup works well enough if you accept Fred Van Lente’s leaps in logic, so let’s just go with it.
Meanwhile, Chris, the boy at the heart of the everyday human story, has terrible dreams about his family melting during an alien invasion. When Chris wakes up in the encampment, he seeks out Silk to tell him he accepts Silk’s offer to become his ward. Silk is thrilled with the boy’s courage, but to embrace his new role, Chris must perform a small task for Silk – Chris must kill his mother.
Whoa! Talk about a gut punch. Chris’s role as the audience avatar takes a nasty turn when we see, for the first time in this crossover, how nasty Silk can be. A persistent criticism of this crossover is the lack of clarity surrounding Silk’s plans, so this step helps, even if it doesn’t go far enough to show Silk as a world-ending villain.
Meanwhile, the battle against the Immortals in the Faraway rages on. Young and Old Tama sneak away to look for Savage by climbing the pyramid toward a life source Tama detects. When they reach the top, they find a crowd of Silk clones who register as the same life source. The clones open fire, killing Old Tama.
In outer space, Aric rematerializes on Gorin after his confrontation with Deity. The godlike being is nowhere to be found, but Aric is soon confronted by a trio of beings brought to Gorin in the same manner – The Psi-Lords.
The issue concludes with Livewire accidentally putting out a distress call after interfacing with the alien shuttle and young Tama putting out a Faraway-powered distress call of her own.
Overall, Resurgence #4 does exactly what it needs to do – assemble all the heroes in one place in preparation for a climactic confrontation heading into next month’s finale. Fred Van Lente improves on the tone and urgency of the previous issue to make the penultimate entry a fairly good success.
Artwork and Presentation:
We’ve got a whole squad of artists picking up their “brushes” to pull this issue off, and to be blunt, the final result is one of the best-looking comics Valiant has produced since partnering with Alien. The inks, layouts, figure work, action, and coloring are well above average on every count, which is a good sign when multiple artists can complement each other so well.

RESURGENCE #4 brings all the heroes and villains across the Valiant Universe (literally) together in the Faraway in anticipation of next month’s finale. Fred Van Lente’s script amps up the serious tone and urgency to get the momentum train rolling, and the unusually large art team’s set of visuals looks better than any other Valiant title in circulation.
