Analysis of REDCOAT #11:
Recap:
When we last left Simon Pure in Redcoat #10, the immortal crossed paths with famous shooter Annie Oakley after his luck from a contentious poker game ran out. Annie challenged Simon to a shooting competition, and Simon reluctantly accepted. The match ran for hours, but a winner wasn’t declared because the match was interrupted by a gang of bank robbers rescuing a cohort and taking an innocent family hostage. Annie was quick to jump to the rescue, but Simon needed more than a little prodding and encouragement to overcome his fear of failure. The issue ended with the two shooting experts parting as friends and Simon catching the attention of a magic wielder.
Plot Analysis:
In Redcoat #11, timelines collide during the time of the American Civil War. We begin with a Confederate soldier riding into Columbus, Georgia, in July 1864. He carries a satchel from someone named The Cobbler with information that will guarantee victory for the Confederate army. If the soldier is successful, he’s guaranteed a promotion. When the soldier stops in Columbus to resupply and upgrade his uniform, a young black girl who works in the supply depot overhears the soldier and steals the satchel while the soldier talks with his cohorts.
The girl makes it into the woods outside of town before the soldiers catch up to her. Suddenly, the group is blown back by a small explosion of blue light. Out of the crater emerges The Northerner – a man dressed in a Union uniform but carrying a bag with modern weapons and wearing modern boots. The Northerner kills the soldiers, burns the Confederate documents from The Cobbler, and disappears with the girl to ensure her safety after committing a risky act.
Elsewhere, Simon Pure enjoys his time as a courier who lived long enough to know all the secret ways to get around battles, towns, and fields as he works for both sides of the conflict. One evening, Simon is approached by The Cobbler with a lucrative offer to deliver critical documents. The morally ambiguous Redcoat accepts the offer.
Later that night, Simon drunkenly stumbles his way through the town when he’s accosted by The Northerner and the little girl with a mission to save America.
First Impressions:
Now we’re cooking with colonial firewood. Geoff Johns switches gears away from the episodic storytelling that introduces a series of pseudo-historical figures to put Simon Pure back on track for a larger historical epic. This issue feels like a return to form with a super-strong introduction to a new character – The Northerner.
Artwork and Presentation:
Bryan Hitch and Andrew Currie render a phenomenal set of visuals to bring the setting and characters to life. Hitch’s pencils bristle with personality and realistic detail, and Currie’s inks are practically pristine. When you add in Brad Anderson’s exquisite coloring, this comic looks fantastic.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
Everything about this issue works, and it’s one of the strongest entries in the series to date. Geoff Johns begins a new arc with a solid premise, an interesting mystery that mixes historical fiction with magic, and a hard-hitting debut for The Northerner. As a bonus, Simon Pure’s unlikable personality is kept to a minimum, which helps a lot.
The Negatives:
There’s nothing to criticize about this issue beyond a few, inconsequential nitpicks. Truly, Redcoat #11 is one of the best issues in the series.
Big Picture:
Series Continuity:
The creative group known as Ghost Machine keeps teasing that a major crossover between characters will happen sometime in the not-so-distant future. There’s no word yet on when that will happen or the details of the event that will draw the characters together. As of now, Redcoat and Junkyard Joe are becoming regular side characters in Geiger, but that’s about it.
