RED SONJA: THE SUPERPOWERS #3 Review

Posted on March 4, 2021

In RED SONJA: THE SUPERPOWERS #3, available from Dynamite Comics on March 10th, 2021, The Project’s Blue Team is on the verge of being sacrificed to elder gods by the mad sorcerer, Skarab Nor. It’s up to Red Sonja to stop Nor’s sacrifice before the Blue team becomes demon food.

Was It Good?

Yes, albeit a little thin on story. The entire issue is one, extended rescue scene, but the tension is so high in the writing and the art is so good, it’s easy to overlook the lack of story meat.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

We begin where issue #2 left off (read our very positive RED SONJA: THE SUPERPOWERS #2 review to get caught up). The Project’s Blue Team is trapped in the tentacles of a beast controlled by Skarab Nor. Blue Team tries to explain, to reason with the sorcerer, but he refuses to listen with only human sacrifice on his mind.

Casually, Red Sonja steps forward from her hiding spot with a proposition. As a mercenary, she can “read the room” as the saying goes, and promises to swear allegiance to Nor since he’s clearly more powerful than the heroes that bested her. Nor likes the way Sonja thinks and agrees to spare her.

Nor begins examining the gadgets confiscated from the Blue Team when he sees that they contain information about other worlds and… something else that frightens him. Seizing the distraction, Sonja draws her sword and separates Skarab Nor from his arms.

Of course, Nor is not done yet. He orders his tentacled monster to attack Sonja and the two begin a tentacle-slicing, column-smashing, hero-crushing battle that lasts for the rest of the issue. Without spoiling the ending, more tentacles make their appearance, the Blue Team may be convinced magic actually exists, Sonja is not at all convinced the Blue Team aren’t daemons, and Sonja’s world gets a lot bigger.

Final Thoughts

RED SONJA: THE SUPERPOWERS #3, available from Dynamite Comics on March 10th, 2021, is filled with great art, great action, but a thin story. Admittedly, the conclusion is satisfying, and the final page sets up much bigger and more exciting things to come.

Score: 7.5/10
