Is It Good?

PURGATORI MUST DIE #2 takes readers deeper into the Biblical rabbit hole, pulls a few rabbits out of Purgatori’s magical hat, and reminds readers exactly why the gods are so afraid of the titular character. Filled with crazy action, a sharp wit, and decent art, this issue is a strong second issue for the series.

What works best about this issue is the almost Looney Tunes-esque vibe with a bloody twist. Purgatori is the metaphorical Road Runner, able to get out of any situation with a smile on her face, leaving her opponents bloody and frustrated. Her hunters, especially Evil Ernie, come up with all kinds of complicated ideas to trap the slippery demon, but just like Wily E. Coyote, their plans end in utter failure.

Make no mistake. Despite the comparison to a kids’ cartoon, the tone isn’t jokey or comedic. There is a black humor edge to the plot, but everyone treats the hunt with deadly seriousness. Still, the fun is in the hunt, and even though the plot is becoming increasingly thin, it’s fun to see how Purgatori will undoubtedly survive the next assault.

Sarrasecca and Aiala’s art is pretty darn good in this issue. Not great, but very good. Sarraseca’s line work is exceptionally clean, and Aiala’s coloring work is flawless. The minor down point is a mild flatness in some of the panel compositions where characters look a little too two-dimensional, but otherwise, the art is very good.

What’s It About?

Check out our PURGATORI MUST DIE #1 review to find out how many Dynamite characters decided to join the hunt.

We begin with a flashback to the 19th century when Purgatori encountered a pair of African hunters. She enjoys a simple conversation about predators and prey before showing the hunters which they are.

Now, Purgatori is on the run Lady Hel’s specters, while Evil Ernie plots her next location with a magic map, Draculina casts a homing spell, and Lilith uses the tracking skills of her were-beast servants. When Purgatori appears to be cornered, she remembers a spell taught to her by the famous gunman, Jesse James.

We conclude the issue with a dead Purgatori, an alive Purgatori, and a getaway of Biblical proportions.

PURGATORI MUST DIE #2 amps up the wild hunt with magic spells, gore, a razor-sharp and black wit, and an unexpected amount of fun. The clever shenanigans from Purgatori get her out of impossible situations, and while the plot is growing thin, the ride is interesting enough to keep you invested.

Score: 8.5/10
