Is PROMETHEUS IN CHAINS #3 Good?
Rich Davis’s third chapter in his third nightmare series brings the horror of Dr. Frankenstein’s actions to the fore when Elizabeth is reborn, but not in the way Frankenstein had hoped. Davis crafts a fevered chapter about a man’s grief turned into an obsession, inevitably leading to a nightmare.
When last we left Dr. Frankenstein, we learned his migration to America to work on cutting-edge experiments ultimately led to his wife’s death from cancer. Unable to cope with the loss, Frankenstein endeavored to use his access to experimental technology and his genius to bring back his lost love. Now, Frankenstein is confronted with the creature he created, but the shock is more than he can bear.
Be forewarned. This issue intermixes healthy doses of Frankensteintn’s actions with hallucinations and distorted imagery. Frankenstein’s fragile psyche struggles to reconcile the reality of what he’s created with the crashing grief that comes from his realization that the creature is not the Elizabeth he remembered. Davis brings readers along as a companion to Frankenstein’s broken mind and spirit through psychedelic imagery, so the visuals are wild.
What’s great about PROMETHEUS IN CHAINS #3? Davis creates a palpable atmosphere of insanity to elevate the updated take on a classic monster story. The shock isn’t just limited to a reanimated monster but also the madness Frankenstein experiences.
What’s not so great about PROMETHEUS IN CHAINS #3? Admittedly, the wild imagery and Frankenstein’s fractured perceptions can be a challenge to wrap your brain around. At the risk of sounding cliché, it helps if you allow yourself to “experience” this comic, which can be a turnoff for some readers.
How’s the art? The wild imagery and fractured perceptions are pulled off largely through Jordan DiRenzo’s dramatic art. Whether the wild visuals are or are not your cup of tea, you can’t deny that they’re impactful.

Check out our PROMETHEUS IN CHAINS #2 review to find out how Frankenstein succeeded.
We begin with Victor Frankenstein remembering one of his last visits to the hospital as his wife neared her end. The scene shatters as Frankenstein awakes from a stupor in the present to see the reconstituted body of his wife lying on the floor. The body slowly begins to rise, but the form and face Frankenstein sees break through his obsessive haze to confront him with a grotesque vision.
The creature lunges at Frankenstein, and out of instinct, Victor smashes candelabra on the creature’s head, knocking it out. Overwhelmed by what’s happened, Victor sedates himself with an opiate, only seeing too late before passing out that the creature is rising again.
We conclude the issue with sparks, emptiness, and sobs.

PROMETHEUS IN CHAINS #3 is a wild, trippy, psychedelic journey through Victor Frankenstein’s mind when he’s shocked by the realization of the monster he’s created. Davis creates a script that works best as an ‘experience’, and DiRenzo’s weird imagery is incredibly impactful.
