Is It Good?
PROMETHEE 13:13 #4 ends the series (or is it just the arc?) with a mind-bending, time-warping finale that may satisfy some readers. However, other readers may find the ending convoluted and rushed.
Andy Diggle’s finale focuses on wrapping up the events on the mysterious island spied in Darla’s vision while the crew of the Atlantis struggles to figure out what their alien captors are up to. All threads wrap up (mostly), but there’s so much ground to cover that the wrap-up comes at you at a rapid-fire pace.
In other words, the story reaches a definitive ending, but there’s a bit of fumbling and stumbling in a mad dash to get there. We learn what the aliens want with the crew of Atlantis. We learn whether or not Henry’s time portal plan will work. And we discover the fate of humanity and Darla.
However, the downside of this issue is the amount of new information introduced, which leads to more questions that never get answered. What happens to Atlantis after they leave the aliens? Why was Darla chosen, and how is Darla supposed to save humanity alone? You get the impression there are at least one or two issues worth of story left to tell to make this ending feel complete and satisfying, but the answers to those big questions never come. Diggle doesn’t quite stick the landing.
Martinbrough’s art provides plenty of visual interest, even if the story doesn’t altogether make it clear what’s happening. There’s a fair bit of gore in this issue, more than the previous issues combined. The alien designs suitably keep an air of mystery as you see mostly silhouettes and outlines, but it’s clear the figures interacting with Darla and others are not human. Visually, this comic is an interesting mix of grounded sci-fi and horror, so on that count, the comic is a success.

Check out our PROMETHEE 13:13 #3 review to learn more about the island in Darla’s vision.
We begin with the remaining Atlantis crew members at odds as they struggle to figure out what happened to Kramer and Zimmer on their space walk. Suddenly, communications return, Zimmer informs the crew she’s bringing a rambling Kramer back aboard. Eventually, Kramer becomes lucid enough to explain the aliens sent him back to Earth briefly to find a little girl and touch her with a special tool. That little girl is Darla.
Meanwhile, most of Henry’s survivor group is dead on the island after the alien attack. Cade flies into a rage, blaming Darla for the deaths, but Henry kills Cade before Cade kills Darla. Suddenly, an alien appears, kills Henry, and restores Darla’s memory. It explains she was chosen to stop humanity’s extinction at the hands of a rival group of aliens.
We conclude the issue with multiple time jumps, lasers, a warning that may or may not happen, and a look at the future.

Final Thoughts

PROMETHEE 13:13 #4 wraps up the story completely but rushes to get to the end while introducing new plot questions that never get answered. Martinbrough’s art is solid, and the dialog is good, but this ending fails to satisfy by trying to get too far too fast.
