Is It Good?
PROMETHEE 13:13 #2 has a different tone and mood than the first issue. Whereas issue #1 focused on the uncertainty and growing paranoia from groups who’ve bought into Darla’s visions, this issue dives headlong into separating truth from conspiracy by giving readers a taste of what’s to come. In short, this issue is more sci-fi than paranoia.
The story breaks down into two plot threads – Darla’s time with her kidnappers and the secret mission of the space shuttle Atlantis.
In terms of pure dramatic tension and unease, Darla’s kidnapping is the most effective of the two threads. Even when Darla is shown evidence that her visions aren’t due to psychological trauma, she struggles against the cult leader, Henry, who pleas for her to cooperate. You feel a direct connection to Darla’s plight, and the scene grabs you with white-knuckled tension as Henry appears to be willing to do anything, including kill, to get his way.
That said, the thread centering on the crew of the Atlantis is by no means weak. On the contrary, it’s fascinating to watch what happens when their dubious mission to deploy a satellite suddenly gets turned upside down. The crew’s reactions appear genuine, and again, you can’t help but empathize with their situation. When a writer can get the reader to wonder how they would react in the same situation, that’s the best possible outcome.
Martinbrough’s art is grounded and dramatic, even in smaller scenes with nothing but a dialog exchange between two characters. The standout in Martibrough’s art is the panel composition that gives the story a cinematic quality. In all, the art suits the story to a tee.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Before diving in, catch up on Darla’s backstory and how it plays into the future in our PROMETHEE 13:13 #1 review.
We begin with the crew of the space shuttle Atlantis working to deploy what they’ve been told is a top-secret satellite. The crew is skeptical as the way they’re instructed to go about their work doesn’t make sense. Suddenly, Atlantis is yanked out of position, and all communication to Earth is cut off.
Meanwhile, Darla meets Henry, the cult leader who kidnapped her and killed several guards. Henry explains how he used to work for the government and how he helped keep secrets about alien visitations. He believes (knows?) Darla’s visions are true. Henry shows her by taking a sample of her tears and placing them under a microscope where Darla can see small objects that Henry claims are alien nanites
We conclude the issue with a plan to bypass an alien invasion and an unbelievable side-trip.
