Is It Good?
Short, sweet, and to the point. PROJECT SHADOWS #1 is a better-than-average start to a new hero team tasked with stopping threats, both foreign and domestic. If you like team books in the spirit of the Suicide Squad or WildCATs, this comic may just hit your sweet spot.
Team books only work when the creators get the mixture of teammates just right, and on that point, Dupree, El Tab, and Martinez nail the mix. Each character has a unique skill or power, their personalities are drastically different, sometimes leading to interesting interpersonal conflicts, and their first mission highlights what each teammate brings to the group. By the end of the first mission, you’re solidly grounded in this world with these characters and itching to see what they can do next.
That said, the team’s first mission is a bit short. The pacing is handled well, and the rest of the technical execution (dialog, scene transitions, etc.) is spot-on, but not much time is given for setup or context. You could argue that the backgrounds of each member will be told in future issues, but for now, readers are thrown right into the action without any context. In other words, this issue leaves you wanting more, which is a good problem but an unsatisfying one.
The art is excellent. The art teams hit you with big wow moments in the displays of power. The character designs are memorable (Except for Holes. F*** that guy), and the character acting is excellent. Kudos to the art team.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with the team teleporting to an undisclosed island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. With a classic hero splash page, we’re introduced to the members of Project Shadows and their respective abilities. Their mission? Infiltrate an illegal medical experimentation complex where scientists breed monsters for sale to the highest bidder.
Using a mixture of illusions, teleportations, and stealth, members of the team infiltrate the lab and find the evidence they need to shut it down. Suddenly, the alarms go off, and the stealth mission turns into an all-out assault. We conclude the mission with a dirty-joke-filled debrief, a prison escape, and a super secret solo mission.

Final Thoughts

PROJECT SHADOWS #1 is a rock-solid start for a series about a snarky super-team working for a shady(?) government agency. The action is big and exciting, the characters are instantly memorable, and this issue leaves you wanting more.
