Was It Good?
Based on the cover art and the solicit description, it wasn’t as comical as I was expecting. In fact, it felt downright depressing in some spots.
This is the story of a man who’s hit bottom in every way you could possibly imagine. He’s a failed artist with a garage full of paintings nobody will buy. His wife has kicked him out of the house, only allowing pre-arranged visits so he can see his two kids. He has a drinking problem that’s spiraling out of all control. And he’s flat broke.
Not exactly a setup tailor-made for a fun read. And to be blunt, it’s not fun.
However, there’s a small seed of potential in this first issue that hints at something more interesting in future issues. When a man has nothing left to lose and nowhere to go, can he find a way to co-exist with a flesh-eating ghost?
That’s the big question. It’s not answered here, but it is set up well enough to make me curious to find out how well it’s answered in the next issue.
The art is decent enough in this issue. It’s not the typical Zenescope house style, and that’s okay. But there’s a mildly cartoonish quality to the art that makes it feel almost like you expect to see some sitcom-level shenanigans.
That said, when the art gets dark during the murder scenes, this issue isn’t afraid to get a little gory. And that, I can appreciate.
Overall, this is an odd comic but it creates enough curiosity to stick around to see what happens next.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Todd is a failed artist who’s hit rock bottom. Separated from his wife and kids, and battling alcoholism, Todd makes a desperate move to repair his life by spending the last of his money to buy a fixer-upper house as a way to reunite his family.
What the locals and the realtor failed to tell him is that a murderous ghost occupies the house. Before Todd knows it, the contractors he brings in to help with repairs disappear. Strange thumping and bumping can be heard in the ceiling. And the locals give him strange looks when he tells them where he lives.
Eventually, the spirit appears to Todd, but something strange happens. Instead of killing him, it goes back to the attic, leaving him alone. Terrified of his new housemate, and realizing his plan to move his family in has fallen apart, Todd reaches the end of his rope. When he attempts the unthinkable, the deadly spirit sees something different in Todd than any who’ve come before him.
We conclude the issue with an odd stalemate.
Final Thoughts
POSSESSIVE #1 is the story of a sad, pathetic, lonely man whose life is about to get better or much, much worse. The art is good enough to serve the story and the pacing is very good, but the tone is hard to get a handle on. That said, there are enough curious things happening to justify checking out the next issue.
