Was It Good?
Today’s review focuses on the roughest, toughest, macho man on this side of the Mississippi, Pinpoint Washington. At the risk of sounding trite, that’s all you need to know about this comic.
Following in the same vein as classics such as Shaft (1971) and Three The Hard Way (1974), Paige and Morgan put together a protagonist practically dripping with macho attitude and an impossibly tough demeanor. Pinpoint does what he wants where he wants when he wants, and Lord helps anyone who gets in his way.
Take this main character and drop him into a scenario where he has to take on an entire island of criminals (even the children carry guns), and you’ve got the makings of a crime thriller that nails the vibe of the best Blaxploitation films from the 1970s. In fairness, Pinpoint’s assignment on the island is plausible, but the setup is a little tough to swallow. If you get past the idea of an island rendered uninhabitable due to natural radiation, an island that seems to have a fully functional town, then you’ll enjoy this story.
This is a B&W comic, so we look for appropriate use of shading and grey tones to do the work a full-color palette would. Here, the B&W art is mostly excellent. The grey tone application is nearly perfect, the character designs are memorable, and the overall panel composition feels cinematic. That said, the linework would be a little cleaner and smoother in a few spots, but that’s a minor down point.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a flashback to Pinpoint Washington riding in the back of a military truck with his squad in the Middle East. After some playful banter and smack talk, their convoy is attacked by missiles. Suddenly, Pinpoint wakes up from the memory strapped to a chair and tortured by a Jamaican crime boss.
One week earlier, Pinpoint makes a raucous entrance into the nearby military base where he’s called in for a meeting. We learn an uninhabited island, near the southern coast of Jamaica, has turned into the perfect criminal hideaway. Natural radiation scared away developers, and the radiation interferes with prying surveillance satellites.
Pinpoint is assigned to head to the island to rescue an undercover agent and former friend of Pinpoint’s, Melina. We conclude the issue with needles, bratty kids, and the world’s worst ashtray.

Final Thoughts
PINPOINT #1 is the roughest, meanest, toughest, action-thriller comic you didn’t know you were missing. The main character is built to be an unstoppable force headed straight for an immovable object in the guise of a deadly island. The artwork is excellent, the dialog hits the right tone, and this comic will leave you hungry for more.
