Was It Good?
PENTAGRAM OF HORROR! #1 is the latest title from writer/artist Marco Fontanili under Scout’s Black Caravan imprint. If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we’re big fans of Black Caravan as they haven’t put out a bad horror comic yet, so it was quite a shock when we discovered… this comic is another winner! So far, Black Caravan can do no wrong.
To set your expectations, PENTAGRAM OF HORROR! #1 is not a full story in the traditional sense. The comic is composed of a simple setup, an action, and a reaction. It’s as stripped down as you can get, which is typical for creators who pull double duty on writing and art. That said, every page and every panel is laser-focused on building up a sense of dread when an artist makes a deal with the devil that has an expiration date. The foreboding dread is torturous, as it should be, so all credit goes to Fontanili for executing an effective little cautionary tale.
The art is as effective as the story on several levels. Fontanili uses close-up panels to focus on a single eye or shadow to build anxiety. The use of silhouettes makes the reader imagine what they’re seeing is worse than it is… or is it? And the gore, when it hits, hits hard.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a failed artist, Edward, in a field conjuring a summoning spell. Edward calls forth the Devil to make a deal – sell his soul in exchange for great talent. The Devil accepts on the condition he comes to collect in ten years.
Tragedy strikes when Edward soon realizes having the talent is not the same as being applauded and appreciated for talent. We conclude the issue with a knock at the door, tragic realization, and the curse of memory.

Final Thoughts
PENTAGRAM OF HORROR! #1 is another impactful first issue for Scout’s Black Caravan imprint. The story is so simple yet elegant in its creepiness. The building sense of dread practically chases you from page to page. And the gore hits at the peak of anxiety for maximum effect.
