Was It Good?

PELLUCIDAR: ACROSS SAVAGE SEAS #3 is a better-than-average issue designed to be the penultimate setup for the big finale to come. Wolfer deftly maneuvers the players in place and delivers several twists and turns to keep the proceedings interesting. That said, this is a dialog- and narration-heavy issue, so the pacing leans towards the slow side.

As with almost all ERB titles, the absolute highlight is the stellar art by Puglia, Pillai, and Jane. The dramatic linework, the bold, rich colors, and the outstanding lettering make every page a visual treat. Puglia’s panel composition infuses drama into every scene, but Pillai’s coloring takes the art to another level with plenty of pop. These books are gorgeous.

Wolfer’s writing in this issue is generally solid, but the pacing ranges from okay to outright slow. On the positive side, the plot moves along, Gretchen’s plan works (until it doesn’t), and Wolfer adds a twist ending that builds a strong cliffhanger.

On the downside, there’s a lot of talking and narration that drags the issue down in some spots. In fairness, there isn’t any fluff in the narration, but you may wonder if Wolfer is trying to do too much world-building in a single issue. All of the information is either useful or interesting, but it’s a lot, and you may feel like you’re reading an illustrated novel instead of a comic on some pages.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

It’s been more than a minute since we followed this series, so find out where we left off in our PELLUCIDAR: ACROSS SAVAGE SEAS #2 review.

We begin with the Krataklaks examining Gretchen’s confiscated pistol with Toran the Tall. Toran plays coy to convince the crab-like slavemasters to discard the pistol so he can confiscate it as part of Gretchen’s plan to free the slaves.

Elsewhere, Gretchen and Omlot quietly traverse the island, looking for a safe spot to prepare for the assault. Suddenly, Nadok sneaks up on them, but he’s quickly overpowered by Omlot. Before Nadok can divulge information about his masters, a flock of pterodactyls attack the trio and carry Nadok away to be their next meal.

Later, Gretchen and Omlot arrive at the rendezvous point where Toran is supposed to meet them. Gretchen is puzzled to find Toran leading a group of slaves into a dark cave. When she enters the cave a little later to find out what’s going on, Gretchen finds her original plan has taken an unexpected turn. We conclude the issue with an escape and unexpected alliance.

Final Thoughts

PELLUCIDAR: ACROSS SAVAGE SEAS #3 is an informative issue that builds the world, moves the players in place for the finale, and ends on a strong cliffhanger. The art is gorgeous, and plenty of things happen, however, the sheer volume of dialog and narration slows several pages to a crawl.

Score: 7.5/10
