Is It Good?
OSWALD AND THE STAR-CHASER #1 is the latest space adventure from Scout Comics that spins a yarn about an inexperienced Space Knight with delusions of grandeur. Tommy Kulik and Tyler Villano Maron introduce readers to Oswald Bretters – an inexperienced adventurer out to save the kingdom, even though he has no idea what he’s doing, and nobody sees him as anything more than an annoying nuisance.
Kulik and Maron’s story hits the right balance between silliness and charm. Oswald has a heart for adventure, but he’s clearly presented as an underdog who doesn’t have a chance of succeeding in his current state. Oswald trips over his own incompetence in every attempt he makes to get heroes to join his cause. However, fortune favors the bold (or the foolish, if you prefer), and Oswald’s unflappable determination to succeed brings him into contact with Star-Chaser, the enigmatic warrior.
In terms of writing execution, this first issue checks all the standard boxes. The pacing, scene transitions, and dialog are all on-point, and the character development is said. That said, the tone may not be everyone’s cup of tea as Oswald is a little too foolish to be taken seriously by the readers as well as his naysayers. Oswald will need to grow and evolve quickly for this arc to be taken as anything more than distracting fluff.
Hoskisson and Robins deliver a decent collection of art pages in this first issue. The array of alien characters is unique with a slightly comedic veneer, the coloring is outstanding, and the small bit of action shows energetic promise.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Oswald Bretters, self-professed Space Knight, entering The Crab’s Claw saloon to look for heroes to join his crusade to oust the Evil King. Oswald is stymied by one “no” after another until the barkeep is sick of Oswald bothering the patrons.
When Oswald is about to be thrown out, Star-Chaser proclaims Oswald is his companion, and the two leave with their hides intact. Oswald and Star-Chaser probe each other with questions to find out what each knows or doesn’t know about adventuring. It’s clear Oswald falls short in all areas.
We conclude the issue with an arrest, an escape, and an adventure’s beginning.

Final Thoughts
(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)
OSWALD AND THE STAR-CHASER #1 kicks off a mildly amusing space adventure about a self-proclaimed, bungling, incompetent space knight who sets out to take down the evil king. The cast of characters is amusing, and the artwork is solid, but it’s yet to be determined if this story has more to offer than a slightly silly setup.
