Was It Good?
ONE GIANT LEAP #1 is our first offering from Blood Moon Comics, and we’re happy to have them on board this crazy game of comics reviews. Blood Moon provided us an advance review copy for this title, so it’s fair to point out upfront that the copy we received is uncolored and may go through several revisions before it’s released to the public. We’ll be kind, and so should you.
The central premise is this issue’s strength by far. The title and cover imply this issue has something to do with superheroes but based on the story so far, that may not be the case… yet. What you get is a supernatural/mystical game between the gods who use the cast of characters to enact some grand design. It’s easy to relate to Alex and his friends as a group who’ve fallen under the spell of social media fame, eager to take bigger and more reckless risks to feed their addiction to online attention. Since this is just the first issue, more work is expected in fleshing out the group, but Alex is set up nicely, and you can see what motivates him and how he gets himself in trouble by taking his risks too far.
The intriguing component is the celestial game and what the gods intend to do with Alex in the aftermath of his failed stunt. The gods’ brief discussion gives you the impression something big is about to happen, and Alex’s misadventure is just the start. If nothing else, this issue gets top marks for building curiosity.
The down point of the issue is its roughness. We’ve already pointed out this is an early draft, so leniency is in order, but there’s definitely some work needed. The character designs are solid and distinctive, the dialog is on point, and the action scenes flow nicely. What’s needed is an improvement in the character anatomies with foreshortening. Frequently, the character’s limbs look stunted, giving a deformed appearance, when foreshortening should create an illusion of distance. With some adjustments in this area and good coloring, this issue will be much improved.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a rooftop scene where a group of teenagers is setting up an Internet Livestream to film an event. We learn through conversation snippets that Alex is planning to perform a jump between buildings, captured live for the world to see.
We see through flashbacks that Alex is an accomplished athlete, dominating every sport he tries. This latest stunt would not only solidify his athletic prowess but also guarantees a massive social media following. Elsewhere, two celestial beings play a game of chess while they discuss whatever machinations they have for the Earth. We come in at the end of their discussion after a decision has been made, and it appears that Alex is part of that decision.
We conclude the issue with a leap, wide eyes, and confusion.
