Is It Good?
NYX #8 is a thoroughly amusing entry in Nyx’s “contract” to raise her siblings into upstanding demon/human hybrids. This is the type of storytelling we look for on this site because you get plenty of supernatural shenanigans with a healthy dose of humor to put a smile on your face.
The absolute highlight of this issue is Gage’s plot interlaced with oodles of satirical humor. Nyx heads back to 1979 to visit Unison, only to find his powers and attitude are quickly growing out of control. Gage wastes no opportunity to poke fun at Cheerleader/Slasher films, hippies, Wall Street, and more. When Gage gets in the comedy zone, the issue works on all levels.
To be clear, there are plenty of supernatural shenanigans as Nyx teams up with other Dynamite characters (past and present) to stop Unison from consuming the universe. The pacing is energetic, the action is kinetic, the resolution is clever, and the over-arching plot moves a significant step forward. If you’re going to tell a “decompressed” story, this is the right way to do it – by having each issue be a mini-adventure that can stand on its own.
The art by Borstel, Llorach, and Esposito is fine to very good. The one down point, which may not be a down point but a matter of personal taste, is the amount of cheesecake the art team infuses into this issue. Granted, Nyx and her cohorts are not known for dressing modestly, but the art team appears to go out of their way to highlight the characters’ “assets” a little more than usual. If you don’t mind the cheesecake, there’s no issue. If you’d like the cheesecake to occur organically as part of the story, it’s not organic here.

Find out how Nyx got saddled with babysitting duty and her creative method for dealing with it in our NYX #7 review.
We begin with Pantha, Vampirella, and Pendragon (there’s a name from the past) working on costumes for a Cheerleader/Slasher movie shoot. Pendragon’s magic act is losing popularity, and the group needs to take a side job to make ends meet. Adam (Vampirella’s past love interest) and Conrad (Adam’s blind psychic father) round out the gathering. Conrad suddenly receives a vision of a force that will end the universe if not stopped quickly, and their gathering is interrupted by that force, Unison.
Nyx returns from the future to find the Dynamite heroes in a pitched battle to stop Unison from consuming the universe. Unison is taken aback by the arrival of his older half-sister who isn’t pleased to see the mess Unison is making. Unison explains he can hear all the pain and suffering in the world, and Unison can make it stop if he absorbs reality into himself.
We conclude the issue with an attempt at tough love, “wait until your father gets home,” and the regret of getting what you wish for.
