Was It Good?

NYX #6 is the kind of subversive satire that actually works. A rarity in the comics industry these days. why does this issue work as satire? It works because it takes elements of the afterlife, angles in this case, and gives you a different perspective by mixing Nyx’s cynicism with an angel’s overconfidence for a potent combination.

When last we left Nyx, she struck a loophole-riddled deal with the Mad God Chaos to help his offspring integrate their human and demon sides in exchange for amnesty. Of course, both parties use trickery and underhanded tactics to gain the advantage with comical results.

Up to this point, Gage has focused squarely on the demonic side of existence, so it helps to mix things up by adding the heavenly hosts to the mix to see how the two sides interact. The dialog is witty, the angel (Archangel Mikael… no relation to Archangel Michael) is obliviously confident, and their training montage is filled with dry, absurdist humor that lands almost every joke successfully.

The humor hits well, in part, due to Borstel’s art style. Borstel nails Mad God Chaos’s arrogantly amused facial expressions and Nyx’s defiant annoyance. Llorach’s colors are on point, and Esposito’s letters on generally good. The minor down point is the lettering for Mad God Chaos’s speech bubbles as the color combinations, font size, and font choice sometimes made his speech hard to read.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

If you’re wondering about the bargain Nyx struck, first read our NYX #5 review.

We begin with Nyx approaching a group of supernatural beings who might be interested in killing her father to take his throne for themselves and get Nyx out of her arrangement. Every demonkind has an excuse but one being steps forward to take the challenge – Archangel Mikael. It takes some convincing, but Nyx eventually sees potential and agrees to train him.

What follows is a rough and amusing training montage covering everything from counterspells to employ during the coming fight to killing tactics. After a few power upgrades, Archangel Mikael is ready.

Nyx and Archangel Mikael arrive to finish off her father. At first, the battle appears to be one-sided, but soon, Mad God Chaos shows he’s no easy opponent. We conclude the issue with one becoming two, meeting expectations, and payment due.

Final Thoughts

(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)

NYX #6 is a thoroughly amusing series with bloody, gory shenanigans, and a serious-but-not-serious game as daughter and father try to outwit each other. The humor lands, the character acting is excellent, and the setup is imaginative. But for a minor quibble with the lettering, this is a fun comic.

Score: 9/10
