Was It Good?

NYX #2 is a thoroughly entertaining and amusing issue. Bluntly, I was not expecting Gage to come out of nowhere with a 2-character issue filled with surprises, charm, humor, and a teeny bit of heart. This entry in the series demonstrates Daddy/Daughter squabbles are universal, even in Hell.

Except for a chuckle-worthy prologue involving one of Mad God Chaos’s guards, this entire issue is all about said Mad God Chaos and his daughter, Nyx. When you strip away the brimstone and horns, the issue boils down to a fight between a disapproving daughter who wants to live her life her way and a father past his prime who wants to pass on the family business. The charm of Gage’s story is just how relatable the entire scene plays out, and the humor bubbles up through the contrast of the all-too-familiar family squabble set between two uber-powerful demons in a Hell dimension.

The setup and the execution is bizarrely charming, and you could picture this type of scenario playing out just as well in a subversive sitcom as it does in a comic book. This is why we read comics. To be entertained.

The writing is top tier, and it’s further enhanced by the exceptional art from Borstel and the team. The demons look sufficiently demonic, Mad God Chaos’s transformation, once he let’s his guard down, is comedic, and the action scenes hit hard. This comic works on every level.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

If you’re not sure why Nyx is upset with dear old dad, first read our NYX #1 review.

We begin with Nyx paying her father a visit after the events of the last issue. A segment of demons are organizing to overthrow her father on the claim he’s no longer fit to lead. Nyx is looking for answers before father’s business intrudes on her life any further.

Despite given strict orders not to be disturbed, Nyx kicks down the door of her father’s inner sanctum and he immediately attacks the intruder. The two engage in deadly combat until Nyx realizes her father doesn’t recognize her wearing all that human flesh. When Nyx explains who she really is, the Mad God Chaos releases his anger and the glamor hiding his immense beer gut. Nyx is appalled at how much he’s let himself go and considers the demons who tried to recruit her into their rebellion may have a point.

Nyx and Mad God Chaos squabble as any father and daughter would over expectations, what’s to become of the family business, and visions for the future. Mad God Chaos is able to see through time, and he knows the only outcome is either for Nyx to fully embrace her humanity and die in misery or to kill him and assume his throne. We conclude the issue with talk of a third option, Nyx requesting a “ride home”, and more vomit than you’ve ever seen in your life.

Final Thoughts

NYX #2 is a strangely relatable, charming, humorous, and heart-warming chapter about the natural tensions between father and daughter surrounding the family business. The writing is top notch, and the art is excellent.

Score: 9.5/10
