Is It Good?
NYX #10 brings the run to a close (for now) with lots of clever action, a new status quo, and a surprising amount of emotional depth. What do you do when so much of your life is tied up in a dysfunctional relationship, and you’re suddenly free? I bet you didn’t expect to find these types of soulful questions in a Dynamite comic about demons.
Gage’s biggest success in this issue is the amount of emotional depth and complexity woven into the familial relationship between Nyx, her father, and her siblings, both before and after the final act. Rather than have a big battle with (mostly) everyone living happily ever after, Gage takes the path less traveled with casualties, characters making personal and permanent decisions, and the titular character moving toward an uncertain future. Again, this is weighty stuff, and Gage pulls it off with clarity and heart.
To be clear, the issue ends on a down (read: depressing) note. That’s not a bad thing, but Nyx is put into a position to face her past and future honestly, which leads to uncertainty about the character’s future. You could make the case this issue ends the character as we know her, so we’re not quite sure how to feel about the ending. Regardless, it’s well-written and well-executed.
Borstel’s art delivers a remarkable amount of visual interest in this issue. Did you ever wonder what a demon stuck in a time loop looks like? Well, now you know. Have you never seen a cosmically-required deity have his life force ripped from his body? You have now. There’s so much artistic flexing going on in this issue, it’s hard to know where to start, so know that Borstel gives you visual ideas you’ve likely never seen before and may not ever again.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
To find out how the Underworld’s worst family reunion came together, read our NYX #9 review.
We begin with Nyx and her siblings barreling full steam ahead to kill their father, the Mad God Chaos (MGC). Unfortunately, MGC is no pushover, so all frontal attacks prove ineffective. In the chaos (pun intended), MGC admonishes Nyx for tainting her siblings against him and decides to put her down for good.
Suddenly, Behemoth jumps in front of the killing blow to save Nyx. The loss is felt by all, spurring the siblings into action. Despite their best efforts, again, the children are unable to overcome their father. MGC throttles Nyx one more time to deliver the killing blow. This time, Tunrida intervenes to deliver the killing blow for her father.
We conclude the issue with siblings coming together against one and then another, and a reminder that time doesn’t heal all wounds.

Final Thoughts

NYX #10 is a visually imaginative, surprisingly soulful look at a family that puts an end to a generational cycle of toxicity and abuse – in the weirdest way possible. Gage crafts a story filled with all the Dynamite mainstays you would expect but puts the toys back in a different toy chest with an uncertain future. You can’t beat a comic that gives you something to think about.
