Is It Good?
NOTTINGHAM #10 is a wholly unsatisfying and soundly disappointing end to the current arc. Why? Because there’s so much more story to tell RIGHT NOW! Yes, that was a cheap trick, but all in good fun.
This is a banger of an issue to end the arc, and all due credit belongs to Hazan for a cleverly twisted yet faithful take on the Robin Hood legend that puts all the familiar players in very different positions by the end. The subversion of events doesn’t stop with just the plot, however, as it now seems everyone you thought was a villain is now a hero, and heroes are now the villains… from a certain point of view. Hazan’s twists and turns keep readers on their toes as all expectations are thoroughly subverted for the better.
The big surprise of this issue is the wildly unresolved ending. In truth, the lack of resolution is a bit unsatisfying, but it’s done well enough to keep you wanting more. At the very least, a new status quo is established across the board for nearly every character, and the “to be continued…”-style ending drops enough hints about the future to build mountains of anticipation.
Connery Volk’s art in this issue, and the entire arc, keeps getting better and better. The action scenes are energetic, the haunted faces of soldiers in battle resonate, and Romano’s coloring is fantastic. This looks unlike any other comic on the market, and that’s meant as a compliment.

Check out our NOTTINGHAM #9 review to find out how Sheriff Blackthorne was cut down.
We begin with Sheriff Blackthorne, moments from death at the hands of Robin and King Richard. Suddenly, Robin’s killing stroke is interrupted by a flurry of arrows from Aya. King Richard and Robin run to escape the assassin, assuming Blackthrone will die from his injuries.
Meanwhile, Maid Marian confesses to Sir Guy that she had been betrayed by the Merry Men. She swears an oath to reveal the location of the Merry Men’s camp in exchange for clemency and constant protection. Sir Guy believes her testimony and calls for a Council meeting to discuss the matter.
We conclude the issue with a remembrance of a soldier and assassin crossing paths, an ill-timed Council meeting, and the true meaning of “stealing from the rich to give to the poor.”

NOTTINGHAM #10 is a stellar albeit frustrating end to the arc with a new status quo for all the characters. The frustration is due to a lack of full resolution, but enough events occur to leave you wanting more.
