Is It Good?

NORTHERN BLOOD #4 brings the mini-series from J. Michalski to a close with more gonzo, action spectacle than a demolition derby during 4th of July fireworks. If you were hoping this arc would end with a bang, you won’t be disappointed.

When last we left Frank, Estrid, and the Captain, they fought their way out of the Nazi bunker to the snow-covered forest above. Now, it’s an all-out brawl with tanks, mini-guns, bazookas, aerial bombers, dire wolves, frost giants, zombie hordes, and flying, firebreathing dragons. Michalski throws in everything and the kitchen sink to make the grand finale as grand as possible.

If you’re picky, sure, you could say this final issue is simply an excuse to have a big battle. But sometimes, you just want to turn off your brain and have a good time without having to think too much. This is the kind of comic wherein all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. Michalski knows what kind of story he’s telling, and this issue earns bonus points for not trying to be something it isn’t.

How’s the art? Give credit to Antonio J. Rojo for displaying a great eye for cinematic panel shots, intense action, and creative creature designs. Yes, the linework could be cleaner and tighter, but again, Rojo is keenly focused on making this last issue as much of a spectacle as possible, and he delivers.

Check out our NORTHERN BLOOD #3 review to find out how Frank and Enid escaped the underground bunker.

We begin with Frank, Enid, and the Captain ramming through Ivar’s undead army in an armored transport vehicle. Frank clears a path with the vehicle mini-gun while the Captain aims to run over as many zombie soldiers as possible.

Just when the trio thinks they might get away, Ivar sounds a mystical horn that calls forth more zombies, giant dire wolves, humongous frost giants, and… dragons?!? The scene erupts into chaos.

We conclude the issue with explosions, beheadings, and a bizarre (in a good way) bomber versus dragon aerial battle.

Final Thoughts

NORTHERN BLOOD #4 brings the chaos and the crazy for an all-out race to the finish line. J. Michalski calls forth every monster possible to fight in a titanic battle for the ages. Sure, you could nitpick the flaws all day long, but in the end, this issue is all about making sure you’re entertained, and it succeeds.

Score: 8/10
