Is It Good?

Sometimes simple is best. That’s why NORTHERN BLOOD #2 is an effective, entertaining horror comic from start to finish.

When last we left Frank, he was captured along with a handful of civilian resistance fighters by the Nazi regimen who raided Ivar’s stockpile of treasure. Now, Ivar comes to reclaim what’s his with a zombie army at his command, and Frank must find a way to escape or get caught up in a Viking Zombie versus Nazi soldier melee.

Again, sometimes simple is best, and that’s the beauty of J. Michalski’s script. The Nazi captain and his underlings are just evil enough to make their deaths satisfying, but not so evil as to come off as cartoonish. The super simple plot move’s at a hare’s pace, and the sparse dialog feels organic in the moments between neck breaks, disembowelments, and limb severing.

Likewise, Rojo’s art is simple yet effective. The zombie monsters are relentlessly terrifying, the Nazis are snarly with arrogant superiority, and the gore is copious. B&W comics can be hit or miss, depending on the artist’s ability to handle grey tones and shading, but Rojo handles the B&W aesthetic well, and the stark whites enhance the snowy setting.

Check out our NORTHERN BLOOD #1 review to find out how an army of Viking zombies awoke.

We begin with Frank receiving medical attention from one of the rebels, Enid. In their brief exchange, Frank explains how he lost his wife and daughter in Chicago. Enid dresses Frank’s wounds and lends a sympathetic ear.

The Nzi base’s lead scientist continues to examine the inert body of one of the Viking zombies, daydreaming about how his research will lead to a promotion that will outshine his more successful brother. Ivar, the zombie leader, calls for all zombies to awaken and follow him to reclaim his treasure. The scientist’s subject heeds Ivar’s call and ends the scientist’s dreams of promotion.

We conclude the issue with chaos, bloody death, and a bull in a China shop.
