Analysis of NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #6:
Recap:
When we last left our cast of teenage vampires in Night Club (Vol. 2) #5, Risso and his gang of bully vampires systematically tore their way (literally and figuratively) through the town’s gangsters to take over all crime operations. The issue ended with Amy trying every trick she could find to resurrect Sam and Danny, culminating in blood-soaked success.
Plot Analysis:
In Night Club (Vol. 2) #6, it’s the beginning of the end for Danny, Amy, and Sam. Risso and his gang enjoy a night of murderous debauchery when they enter a night club (ahem) and turn the patrons into a feast. The police soon arrive in response to a call for help, spoiling Risso’s fun. When the vampires step out onto the sidewalk, Risso does his worst to the police in full view of witnesses.
Suddenly, Risso receives a call from Danny, taunting the bully to settle the score in a remote location. When the call ends, Sam concludes they have fifteen minutes before Risso arrives. Unfortunately, Sam’s time estimation is off by a lot. The office trailer where the Night Club made the call is immediately surrounded by twenty vampires calling for the Night Club to come out and fight.
Thankfully, Sam’s plan didn’t involve fighting head-on. He activates a detonator, which blows the nearby dam, sending a deluge of water in their direction. The Night Club remains safe inside the office trailer while the vampires outside are torn to shreds by running water.
The issue ends with slashing swords, stomping elephants, and a father repeating the sins of the son.
First Impressions:
Mark Millar is the master of big swings. Full stop. How else could you explain how the Night Club manages to defeat overwhelming odds with a little-known, seldom-referenced vampire rule that would make the executives at Hammer Films proud? More of this, please.
Artwork and Presentation:
You could make the case that Mark Millar’s big swings wouldn’t work if Juanan Ramírez didn’t rise to the occasion with an epic (in scale) series of climactic panels to pull off the final fight. Night Club (Vol. 20 #6 is an action-heavy issue, so Ramírez has to make every sword slash and flying bat look as dynamic as possible, above and beyond the final fight, and he does so handily.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
In any classic hero’s journey, you know the creator got it right when you’re asking yourself up to the very last moment, “How will they get out of this one?” Mark Millar keeps readers guessing until the last possible second and pays off the readers’ patience in spectacular fashion. Plus, Millar earns bonus points for using a seldom-referenced vampire weakness to make the plan work.
The Negatives:
As the smallest of nitpicks, Millar extends the fight at the base of the dam by keeping Risso alive for a little personal payback. The dramatic value of Risso’s survival is undeniable, but the manner in which he survives strains plausibility. Water doesn’t flow that way, Mr. Millar.
The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
Night Club (Vol. 2) #6 marks the end of the volume, but it’s highly unlikely this issue is the end of the series. When will the series return? Dark Horse and Netflix have not released a date, but we’ll keep you posted. Also, the series is slated for adaptation by Netflix as a live-action series, but the timing of filming is also TBD.
Final Thoughts:

NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #6 brings the current volume to a close with a climactic battle between two groups of vampires for the fate of the city and the world. Mark Millar is the best there is at taking big swings to pay off the readers’ patience, and Juanan Ramírez’s artwork is first-rate.
