Analysis of NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #4:
First Impressions:
Nobody likes bullies. Writer Mark Millar brings that viewpoint home to readers in a big way when Risso and his gang, now powerful vampires, put their bullying ways to use. What can you do against a supernatural threat whose entire personality is wrapped around taking and tormenting? Not much.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left the trio of teenage vampires in Night Club (Vol. 2) #3, Sam learned his desire to find love and acceptance led him to grant his current girlfriend, Kendra, the gift of vampirism. Unfortunately, Kendra was secretly siding with the gang of jock bullies to find out Sam’s secret. Now, the bullies are vampires under the leadership of Risso, and they’ve killed Sam and Danny before moving on to take out the local gangster, Rufus, for total control of Philadelphia.
In Night Club (Vol. 2) #4, Risso, Kendra, and their gang of vampire bullies decide to take their game to the next level after killing Sam and Danny. Their next stop? Take over Rufus Tee’s operation with extreme prejudice. Risso walks into Rufus’s hangout and interrupts a business meeting to demand the immediate turnover of all operations. Rufus sends his men to throw Risso out, but they soon learn that the full force of a vampire is unstoppable by mortal men.
Fun and games, indeed. Mark Millar unleashes Hell on Rufus’s men when Risso flexes all the vampiric speed, power, and lethal intent he has available. Although it’s tough to show sympathy for a hardened gangster, you’ll quickly realize how bad things are going to get for everyone in the city.
After the slaughter of his men and a knock to the head for good measure, Rufus wakes up in the Philadelphia Zoo, surrounded by animals out of their cages. Risso and his gang quickly mastered the ability to control lesser animals, so after a round of taunts and mockery, Risso unleashes a troop of monkeys to tear Rufus apart.
Then, the reign of terror against civilians begins. Risso’s gang robs banks, teleports ice cream trucks into the middle of grocery stores, and threatens the lives of everyone they ever picked on in school. The issue concludes with Amy realizing she needs to take drastic steps to get help.
Overall, Night Club (Vol. 2) #4 will give you a newfound appreciation for why you should hate bullies. Mark Millar makes the worst of the worst in Risso even worse, if you can believe it, setting up a villain you can’t wait to see get taken down.
Artwork and Presentation:
Juanan Ramírez’s slick, hip figure work takes on new dimensions when Risso shows why he’s the top dog. You get a vampire who effortlessly smashes, snaps, and eviscerates his opponents with ease. Who knew an artist could make evil look effortless?

NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #4 builds up Risso and his gang of bully vampires into a group of villains you’ll hate beyond reason, giving you a reason to root for Amy to find a way to take them down. Mark Millar’s script perfectly captures all the reasons why people hate bullies so much, and Juanan Ramírez’s art gives Risso a chance to show off his vampire abilities well above anything the Night Club thought to try.
