Analysis of NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #3:

First Impressions:

Well, everyone is dead now. I guess the series is over. Goodnight, Everyone. Drive safe.

What!? You’re still here. Ahh, you figured out there may be a story here that’s worth your time. In typical Mark Millar fashion, Night Club (Vol.2) #3 makes big, shocking moves to keep the readers on their heels, so if nothing else, it’s a mystery where this series is going next.

Plot Analysis:

When last we left Sam, Danny, and Amy in Night Club (Vol. 2) #2, Sam made the worst mistake of his undead life by allowing by letting his current girlfriend, Kendra, in on his secret. To make matters worse, Sam agrees to Kendra’s request to be a vampire so they can be together forever. Unfortunately, betrayal is a b!t@h.

In Night Club (Vol. 2) #3, Sam is ambushed by Risso and his posse, along with Kendra, as a bully gang of vampires. Kendra took the gift of vampirism and spread it to the rest of the gang, and only now does Sam see that he was played the whole time. Sam pulls the knife from his gut after Risso stabbed him and makes a break for him. Sadly, Sam doesn’t get far. Risso’s gang chains Sam up and drags him to a rooftop to meet the rays of the morning sun.

Oh, Sam. We hardly knew ye. Mark Millar begins the issue with a shocking turn as Sam is betrayed in the worst way by Kendra, and that betrayal costs him everything. If you think Millar is pulling a bait-and-switch, the rest of the issue will confirm he is not.

Days later, Danny and Amy visit friends, family, and even the police to find Sam. Grandpa Joe knows something is wrong because Sam has never gone this long without checking in. When Danny and Amy return to the Night Club hideout, they find the place trashed and note to come to the spot where Sam was chained up.

The issue concludes with a demonstration of strength, another painful loss, and Risso’s plan to level up.

Overall, Night Club (Vol. 2) #3 continues to build on the exquisite brutality of High School years, elevated by magnitudes when vampiric powers are thrown into the mix. The outcome for some characters is shocking, which leaves you bewildered (in a good way) about what could possibly happen next.

Artwork and Presentation:

Juanan Ramírez unveils a few new tricks in this issue when Risso painfully demonstrates to the Night Club that his stronger body and mind give him greater vampire capabilities than they thought possible. In other words, Ramírez gets to invent a few new vampire tricks in addition to the fantastic character action and acting.

The Bigger Picture:

Series Continuity:

Briefly, the Night Club participated in last year’s big crossover event – Big Game. As of this writing, there’s no word if there are plans to cross over with other titles in the foreseeable future (or if that’s even possible, given the events of this issue). If a crossover is announced, we will let you know.

Final Thoughts:

NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #3 takes some shockingly big swings that will change the Night Club forever. Mark Millar isn’t afraid of death and consequences, which makes for unsafe and unpredictable storytelling in the best way. Plus, Juanan Ramírez’s art shows off a few new vampire tricks, which look fantastic.

Score: 9/10
