Analysis of NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #2:
First Impressions:
Aww, man. Young teenagers in love can do really stupid things. In this case, stupid decisions lead to a whole heap of trouble for Sam and the rest of the Night Club. Mark Millar’s tale of teenage angst just turned into the worst (meaning: “best”) kind of drama, so buckle up.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left our trio of vigilante vampires in Night Club (Vol. 2) #1, Sam departed the group after his unrequited feelings for Amy caused a rift. Now, Sam uses his vampire powers to make a reputation for himself as an unstoppable jock on the basketball court, drawing all the wrong kinds of attention from the local gangster, Rufus Tee. But Sam’s fortunes could take a darker path if he accepts a (probably) illegal job offer.
In Night Club (Vol. 2) #2, we pick up where the last issue left off with Sam considering the job offer from local gangster Rufus Tee. Despite Sam’s poor choices of late, Sam refuses since he still fancies himself a good guy. Still, the dark forces of temptation and greed continue to apply pressure.
Despite Sam making (almost) all the wrong choices in the previous issue, Mark Millar starts issue #2 by showing that Sam hasn’t fully given in to corruption. His decisions are fueled by hurt and a lack of maturity, so there’s still goodness under the angsty exterior.
Later, Sam goes looking for love and love advice in all the wrong places, save one. First, Sam takes comfort in Kendra McQuade’s bed. Next, Sam visits his grandfather for advice on navigating the ups and downs of romance. Lastly, Sam makes a foolish attempt to “convince” Amy that he’s the one for her.
Millar takes Sam on a very CW-ish journey by visiting friends, family, and now frenemies to help him make sense of his emotionally immature outlook on life. As a former teenager, you can feel for the guy and also be embarrassed by the fool he’s making out of himself, which is exactly the point.
Dejected and hurt, Sam visits Kendra again, but this time, Sam wants connection more than sex, and he makes a fateful decision to get it. The issue concludes with three days of silence, followed by a very bad night, with the promise of big trouble for the Night Club.
Overall, Night Club (Vol. 2) #2 absolutely nails the spirit of teenage angst and heartbreak, wrapped in a dangerous story about vampires and gangsters. Mark Millar truly has one of the more unique titles on the market that handles adolescent drama and supernatural thrills in equal measure.
Artwork and Presentation:
Juanan Ramírez and Fabiana Mascolo complete the trifecta of success with Mark Millar by crafting a hip, cinematic visual style that looks grounded and integrates supernatural elements seamlessly into a believable world. The character designs and acting are on point, a must for the relationship drama.

NIGHT CLUB (VOL. 2) #2 turns the teenage relationship drama and the threat level up to eleven when Sam’s heartbreak motivates him to make foolishly dangerous choices. Mark Millar absolutely nails the essence of teenagers dealing with the challenges of growing up (as vampires), and the art team’s visual delivery for angst, drama, and supernatural elements is on point. This series is everything Twilight wishes it could be and more.
