Analysis of NEMESIS FOREVER #1:

First Impressions:

Mark Millar’s debut issue in the overarching saga of the villain you love to hate is a masterclass in controlled chaos. It wastes no time in establishing a high-stakes scenario and gives you a front-row seat to a world on the brink of destruction.

Recap:

In the previous series, Nemesis: Rogues Gallery #5, Nemesis infiltrated an island where billionaires gathered to indulge in depraved fantasies. He planned to rob them all, but he was hunted by a team of mercenaries. Nemesis managed to outwit everyone by releasing hacked footage of the billionaires engaging in illegal behavior. He escaped his hunters and revealed his ultimate plan: to take over the world by first taking over a social media company. The issue concluded with Nemesis successfully getting away and setting his new plan into motion.

Plot Analysis:

Nemesis stands on a rooftop in New York City. He speaks on a cell phone, describing his motivation for the terrorist act he is about to commit. He watches as a large explosion engulfs the city in fire and smoke. The new Nemesis has a distinct plan to make people afraid of the unknown again. He is a rich and powerful individual, a stark contrast to his previous persona. He uses his vast resources to cause chaos on a global scale.

The comic then shifts to Hans Berg, a billionaire tech mogul. He is in his office, talking to his assistant, Margot. She questions his recent purchases of random companies, including a social network and a pharmaceutical firm. She realizes that his Nemesis disguise was simply a cover for his grand scheme. He explains that his plan is a long con and that the Nemesis persona is only a small part of it.

Meanwhile, at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, Deputy Director John Pileggi gets a new lead on Nemesis. They have a known accomplice, an explosives expert named Sofie Stein, in their custody. An undercover agent, Kitty Tepper, is prepared to go into the field to take her place. She is briefed on the mission and told that Sofie Stein is an older woman who has a specific physical trait, which the agency can replicate – a missing eye.

The CIA team takes Kitty to a medical room. She is told that she must have her left eye removed to match Sofie Stein, who lost hers in Buenos Aires. Kitty agrees to the procedure, believing it is the only way to get close to Nemesis and save lives. The issue ends with Nemesis setting off bombs in Singapore to sow fear as a precursor to his grand scheme. The new Nemesis’s plan is revealed to be far more widespread than a single city.

Story

The writing is fast paced and punchy. Mark Millar sets a frenetic tone from the start, with explosions and high stakes that build anticipation for the eventual reveal of Nemesis’s plan. The dialogue is snappy, and the plot introduces an ambitious plot and a dedicated hero. It sets up a clear conflict that immediately hooks the reader.

Art

Matteo Scalera’s art is gritty and energetic, with a sense of controlled chaos in every panel. The action scenes are particularly dynamic. Giovanna Niro’s colors are vibrant and create a strong mood. Her use of color in the explosion scenes is particularly exceptional.

Characters

Nemesis is a uniquely menacing character because he’s taken the place of a billionaire tech mogul, a position of great power in the real world. It’s an obvious wink and nod to Elon Musk, but it completely works. This makes him feel more threatening than a simple supervillain. Kitty Tepper is a determined hero who makes an enormous personal sacrifice for the mission.

Positives

The comic’s standout aspect is its relentless forward momentum. It grabs the reader from the very first page with an explosive opening and never lets up. The plot twist at the end is a genuinely shocking turn that reveals a much larger and more terrifying scheme. The character of Kitty Tepper is compelling, as she commits to a massive personal sacrifice in a single panel, proving her dedication and giving the reader a genuine human element to latch onto amidst the high-tech chaos.

Negatives

The biggest weakness, which isn’t too big, is that the story, while action packed, is almost all setup. The constant jumping between different locations can feel a little jarring, as there is little time for the reader to settle into any one scene. The motivation for Nemesis is initially vague, and his plan is only hinted at, which leaves the reader with many questions and few answers.
