Is NEGADUCK #1 Good?
Spinning out of the pages of Darkwing Duck, NEGADUCK #1 brings DW’s most nefarious villain back to St. Canard, but Negaduck’s attempts to enact an evil plan are not what they’re “quacked” up to be (*groan*). Jeff Parker’s take on Darkwing’s devilish doppelganger is laced with corny humor that should work well for the target age group and a plot that looks like it’s going places, even without a Darkwing Duck in sight.
Parker’s script centers on Negaduck (naturally) after he escapes from prison and endeavors to re-establish himself as the top villain of St. Canard. Unfortunately, Negaduck’s efforts are repeatedly stymied when he finds one supervillain after another beating him to the punch. Finally, Negadcuk gets wind of a plan ripe for the stealing.
Yes, you read that right. Darkwing Duck doesn’t make so much as a cameo in this issue. NEGADUCK #1 starts and remains squarely focused on the supervillain and his criminal misadventures. If you want to know more about Negaduck through his words and deeds, this issue is a solid pick. Conversely, if you feel there’s no point in a story about Negaduck without Darkwing Duck, you may be frustrated.
What’s great about NEGADUCK #1? Jeff Parker makes the plot interesting, fast-paced, and amusing. Parker doesn’t play Negaduck as a fool, but the character’s personal opinion of himself (much like Darkwing) gets the better of him. Still, when Negaduck smells an opportunity, he takes advantage of it, elevating the character’s smarts and adaptability for the reader.
What’s not so great about NEGADUCK #1? Admittedly, the absence of Darkwing Duck is a head-scratcher, particularly when so many other villains are running around St. Canard, creating havoc. It would have made more sense to follow Negaduck on an adventure away from St. Canard.
How’s the art? Perfect. We recognize that the artist, regardless of who, needs to follow Disney’s style guide within a relatively tight margin. Still, when an artist does good work, an artist does good work, and Ciro Cangialosi does good work in NEGADUCK #1.

What’s NEGADUCK #1 About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a couple enjoying a picnic in the woods on the outskirts of St. Canard. Suddenly, the ground erupts as a mole machine bursts from the ground. Negaduck has escaped prison, and it’s time for him to get to work.
Negaduck dusts off the plans from one of his many secret hideouts and begins preparing to sow seeds of crime and destruction. Unfortunately, Negaduck’s plans are already in motion with other villains, from Professor Moliarty to the Fearsome Four.
Just when Negaduck starts to think he can’t catch a break, he hears about a secret meeting called by Taurus Bulba. We conclude the issue with myths and legends, an alchemist’s dream, and sleepy time.

NEGADUCK #1 brings the formidable Darkwing Duck villain to the forefront when the master criminal’s escape from prison leads to a not-so-smooth life in St. Canard. Jeff Parker’s plot is amusing, and the art is pitch-perfect.
