Is It Good?
N.O.A. #2 turns the surprise twist from issue #1 into an even bigger twist in issue #2 when the details of Nimrod’s plan are revealed, and shockingly, the situation is about to get much, much worse. This issue is exceptional because it takes stakes, raises them exponentially, and makes the outcome legitimately impossible to guess. Impossible outcomes are always a good goal, so this issue already earns high marks on that point alone.
Bergkvist’s script is a series of developments that build and build and build until the relentless pacing and rising stakes grip you with an iron claw. The pacing is breakneck, the plotting pummels you with twists and turns on every page, and the cliffhanger makes an impossible situation far worse. If you’re looking for an action/adventure story, it’s hard not to recommend this one.
The minor down point is the little hiccups in the dialog – missed words, occasionally clunky grammar, repetitive dialog, and so on. The visuals grab your attention, but the dialog and narration in the first act are clunky. Again, it’s not a big flaw, but it slows the momentum starting into the issue.
The art by Bergkvist hits that Bronze AGe sweet spot by channeling the likes of Neal Adams and John Byrne. The characters are strong and have a presence, the destruction rivals big action films, and Aydin’s coloring is excellent.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
First, read our N.O.A. #1 review to find out how a firebreathing dragon wound up in the middle of NYC.
We begin with citizens, support agencies, and the news struggling with the realization that a firebreathing dragon is creating havoc in NYC. Worse, the dragon appears to be growing by feeding on the city’s electrical grid. Agent White tracks down the location where the dragon emerged and finds a flurry of activity, led by Nimrod and his men.
Agent White disables a guard and steals a uniform to listen in on the plan in action. Nimrod released the dragon as a massive distraction while his men ransack banks and jewelry stores in the chaos. Agent white plays along until he finds a chance to summon reinforcements.
Elsewhere, the Director meets with the military and government heads to relay Agent White’s discovery and come up with a plan. We conclude the issue with an imperfect robbery and an explosive phase two.

When did dragons exist?
Dragons, as depicted in fantasy stories, never existed. There are fossil records of dinosaurs with partial similarities to dragons of fantasy tales, such as the Pterodactyl, but the last Pterodactyl did out millions of years ago.
