Is It Good?

Let the games begin!

This is going to be a short review because this is a very simple issue. If you’ve played the Mysterium game, the game on which this comic is based, Christina Blanch’s script dives heavily into the first round of clues and discovery where the collective of Mediums each draw their own conclusions about the murder.

As a stand-alone comic, there isn’t much to the plot. The Mediums use their respective abilities to sus out the killer and the location of the murder. Part of the fun is playing along with the clues and interpretations of the answers to come up with your own conclusions. You get a little bit of the fun here, but the narrative of the comic does most of the leading.

With respect to the script, the Mediums each have a distinctive personality, the dialog is easy to follow, the clues get your puzzle-solving gears turning, and the contradictions between the Mediums’ conclusions strike an entertaining balance between intrigue and confusion.

Monik’s art, along with Michael’s colors, is suitably charming for this type of story. You feel like you’re reading a round of the Mysterium game come to life with storybook whimsy.

What’s It About?

Check out our MYSTERIUM #1 review to relive the circumstances of the murder.

We begin with the Mediums all providing their conclusion as to the identity of the murderer. Each Medium is convinced they have the answer, but all answers are completely different. Realizing they need more information, the Mediums set out to the location where the body was found. Unfortunately, the testimony from the witnesses swears to four different locations where the body was found.

They all can’t be correct, so the Mediums investigate each location individually and employ their powers to find the truth. We conclude the issue with knocks, rattles, and more answers.
