Is It Good?
MYSTERIUM #1 is a comic designed to advertise the Mysterium board game. Let’s be real about that. However, an ad disguised as a comic doesn’t mean it has to be a bad comic. In fact, this comic is pretty darn interesting. Not perfect, but interesting.
If you’re familiar with the Mysterium board game, you already know the main plot, which Christina Blanch adapts faithfully. If you’re new to Mysterium, the premise revolves around a murder during an evening party where an eclectic assortment of guests is in attendance. Later, a small gathering of spiritually talented individuals assembles to solve the mystery with help from the ghost of the deceased. Think of it as Clue with ghosts, and you’ll be in the ballpark.
However, this review isn’t reviewing the board game but the comic. The best bits of the story come into play when the mediums assemble to figure out the murder. Conversely, the party where the murder takes place is a good starting point to introduce the suspects, but the flow of the party and the events leading to the murder, don’t transition smoothly. The setup reads like a collection of scenes cobbled together from a checklist. In other words, the setup is clunky, but the parts of the comic that mimic the gameplay are great.
Alexandria Monik’s art is light, fun, and amusing. Monik’s line work is pristine, and the characters’ facial expressions are quirky and engaging. Nicholas Michael takes the art to another level with gorgeous coloring, impressive textures, and excellent feathering/shading.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a series of character introductions at the start of young Margaret Warwick’s birthday party. Her parents, the Duke and Duchess Warwick, invite an eclectic group of acquaintances, from a doctor to a magician to an archaeologist to a local constable, attend the costume party. As the soon-to-be suspects are introduced, we learn a little about their areas of expertise and their relationship with the Warwicks.
When the evening nears its conclusion, a housemaid rushes in to exclaim one of the guests is dead. We don’t know the identity of the guest or how they died (by design). Months later, Mr. Dowell, a gifted medium, calls upon similarly-gifted individuals from around the world to gather at the Warwick estate to figure out who died, how, and why. We conclude the issue with a display of power, clues, and bumps in the night.

MYSTERIUM #1 brings the board game to life with a murder mystery that only mediums with links to the spirit world can solve. The art is detailed and sharp, and the gameplay aspects of the story are the strongest part of the issue.
