Is MUNDUS TENEBRAS #3 Good?
Ahh, demons. When you make a deal with the supernatural, it’s a sure bet there isn’t going to be a happy ending. MUNDUS TENEBRAS #3 brings Father David’s painful ordeal to a close with revelation, tough choices, and death, so you’ve been warned.
When last we left Father David, Ursula the Succubus gave him a grand tour of the supernatural city hidden around every corner, ending in a private banquet. The attendees included the parents of the girl who died in issue #1 and the angel who possessed her as they all enjoyed a meal of human flesh. Now, Father David reckons with the knowledge that his life with the church is a lie and that the Bishop sent Father David to the exorcism, knowing it would mean the girl’s death.
The storytelling idea of the Holy Church as a front for darker supernatural dealings is nothing new, but Stanisci gives it a unique spin by getting the forces of Heaven and Hell in on the act. Where can you go when all of Eternity is against you in every direction? It’s that question of hopelessness that makes this story unique.
What’s great about MUNDUS TENEBRAS #3? Stanisci’s somber, open-ended conclusion hits like a punch to the kidneys, which is exactly what you want out of a finale. Father David is left a broken, hopeless man but a man at the crossroads. Where Father David goes next is a fun exercise that could go in a multitude of directions.
What’s not so great about MUNDUS TENEBRAS #3? Through flashback snippets, we learn about Ursula’s background (she wasn’t always a Succubus), but the progression of scenes lacks clarity. Specifically, Ursula instructs Father David to retrieve a relic, but it’s not clear who the relic originally belonged to or why she needed it.
How’s the art? Nieto’s art is solid for an indie comic. The character designs are memorable, and the surreal backgrounds elevate Father David’s disconnect from the reality he thought he knew, but the details are overly sparse, and the inks are loose.

We begin with Father David taking stock of his life after witnessing the gruesome banquet the night before and waking up with Ursula after the passion they shared. Father David struggles to come to grips with the fact that his entire life as a man of God was built on a lie.
Ursula urges Father David to avenge the little girl’s death. She can’t enter Holy places without Father David’s help, so he retrieves a Holy relic and escorts her to the Bishop’s office. We conclude the issue with a memory of the Church’s misdeeds, a confrontation, and a choice.

MUNDUS TENEBRAS #3 brings the soul-crushing horror tale to a close when Father David’s crisis of faith reaches an ugly conclusion. Stanisci successfully creates a scenario that feels truly hopeless for a man who only wants to do good, and Nieto’s surreal art amplifies Father David’s shock.
