Is MUNDUS TENEBRAS #1 Good?

Just in time for the Halloween season, Blood Moon Comic presents a tale of horror, demons, and tested faith in MUNDUS TENEBRAS #1. Pablo Stanisci’s story of exorcism and demons may start the way you think, but the story quickly takes an unexpected turn about a holy man forced to question everything he believes in. It’s a human struggle wrapped in a setting of evil.

Stanisci’s script centers on Father David, a priest sent to perform an exorcism on a young girl. The exorcism ends badly, and Father David needs a break from his papal duties. In a low moment of self-reflection, Father David is approached by a mysterious woman who offers to answer all his questions with the promise that he might not like what he hears.

Yes, this issue starts with an exorcism, but the exorcism is brief and only acts as the trigger for Father David’s crisis of faith. So, if you’re tempted to pass this up as yet another exorcism comic, don’t be fooled. The story goes way beyond exorcism shock.

Also, this comic is very NSFW for explicit sexual imagery. Please plan accordingly.

What’s great about MUNDUS TENEBRAS #1? Stanisci’s central premise is the hook and the highlight. A good priest is challenged to confront his doubts and the validity of his teachings, which is relatable on multiple levels to anyone who ever asked what Life is all about. The mysterious woman Father David meets most likely has malicious intentions, but her actions give readers just enough doubt to see how far the Father can go before he reaches a point of no return, so her presence creates a second intriguing hook.

What’s not so great about MUNDUS TENEBRAS #1? As a first issue in a larger story, nothing. Issue #1 is a strong start with loads of intrigue for what comes next.

How’s the art? Admittedly, Nieto’s art style can be an acquired taste for some. The sketchy lines overlaying photo references are distinctive enough to suit Stanisci’s script, but the line work is not as clean as it could be.

What’s MUNDUS TENEBRAS #1 About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We begin with an exorcism in progress. Fater David enacts all the rites he can to save the young girl possessed by the Devil, but the rites end with the girl’s death. Father David is as distraught as the girl’s parents, and Father David’s superiors agree to let him take some time away to rest and reflect.

One evening, Father David is approached by a mysterious woman who seems to know everything about his recent trauma. The woman offers Father David the answers he seeks, and she proves she can deliver with a display of power. Reluctantly, Father David agrees to meet the woman later to hear her out.

We conclude the issue with profane imagery, a challenge, and a request for more.

MUNDUS TENEBRAS #1 uses a failed exorcism to challenge a priest’s belief beyond the limits of mortal experience. Stanisci’s central premise and cast of characters are intriguing, and Nieto’s stylized, creepy art suits the material to a tee.

Score: 7.5/10
