Is MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #114 Good?
Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together? In the last few issues, Melissa Flores painted a picture of Rangers in chaos as Mistress Vile and Dark Specter appeared to hold the upper hand in every conflict. In MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #114, there just might be a light at the end of the tunnel with a cleaner, more focused entry in the series.
When last we left the Rangers, the assortment of fighters from across time and space appeared to be losing at every turn. When Billy hatched a plan to activate one of the Arches using Power Eggs, he was attacked by a mysterious, masked stranger. Now, we learn the stranger (why doesn’t Melissa Flores like to name characters?) is a child of the Morphin Masters, like Zordon, and the stranger believes the Morphin Masters can reverse Dark Specter’s infection of the Morphin Grid. Unfortunately, the Morphin Masters reside at the heart of the grid, and the only way to get there is through a Master Arch.
Melissa Flores’s take on the Rangers is notable for not shying away from going big and expanding the lore. By introducing this new stranger as a child of the Morphin Masters, Flores also introduces readers to the concept of Emissaries (former Morphin Masters children), planting the seeds for more expansion of Morphin lore.
What’s great about MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #114? Flores’s script is lighter on action than recent issues, but that’s a positive because it gives readers time to see where everyone sits before charging off on a new plan of attack. The issue feels less chaotic and easier to follow.
What’s not so great about MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #114? When this issue needs it the most, the issue falls short on motivation. By all accounts, Dark Specter has won, but we don’t know what he won or why he wants to win. Does the Dark Specter want to rule everything? Is it really that simple? If that’s the case, Flores has set up an imposing but superficial villain.
How’s the art? Di Gianfelice’s art is perfectly good for Flores’s script. You can largely tell who’s who, which is no small feat considering how many rangers are present, and the brief moments of action are well done.

What’s MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #114 About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #113 review to find out what happened when Billy attempted to restart an arch.
We begin with the captured Rangers introducing each other aboard Mistress Vile’s ship. They don’t know why they were captured instead of killed, but Angel arrives to bring them before Dark Specter for their intended purpose.
Elsewhere, Billy and Yellow Dino Ranger briefly scuffle with a masked stranger before they call a truce to talk. The stranger is an Emissary, a former child of the Morphin Masters, who traced the source of the Morphin Grid’s infection back to the arch Billy was trying to activate. The stranger explains he’s been searching for other Emissaries to help the fight and that their only hope is to seek out the Morphin Masters to reverse the infection.
Later, the stranger greets Zardon as a fellow Emissary, and the Rangers meet to discuss a new plan. We conclude the issue with a White Ranger’s strength, a broken arch, and an impossible plan of attack.
