Is It Good?
MYTHS & LEGENDS QUARTERLY: THE BLACK KNIGHT – FATE OF LEGENDS is a non-stop thrill ride from start to finish. How’s that for a definitive assessment?
Honor Vincent delivers a surprisingly action-packed, fast-paced adventure for a triple-sized quarterly starring Zenescope’s Black Knight. Vincent’s script centers on Peyton Parks, aka the Black Knight, confronting Joselynn, the Jabberwocky’s daughter, as the monster-in-disguise tries to take over Wonderland in a first step toward multi-realm domination.
Vincent establishes Peyton’s role quickly to bring new readers up to speed, creates a subtext of dramatic tension when Peyton is forced to ally herself with Morgan Le Faye, and concludes the adventure with a nod to Arthurian legend while setting the stage for future trouble. The pacing is impressively brisk, the dialog/narration hits the right tone, the action is plentiful, and the stakes feel big. By every measure, this is a banger of an adventure story, even by Zenescope standards.
Is there a down point in the writing? Not really. Vincent checks all the boxes for good storytelling.
On the other hand, the art ranges from okay to good. As you can see from the credits, a small squad of artists worked on this quarterly, and that’s typically a fed flag for art consistency. That red flag is warranted in this case, but the competing art styles are not so different that it looks like different comics sewn together. You can definitely tell when art duties switch from one artist to another, but the differences are mildly annoying rather than wholly offputting for an $8.99 comic.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Peyton Parks, aka the Black Knight, walking home after a successful day in Court as a District Attorney. Suddenly, Peyton is jumped by a hired gunman, forcing Peyton to transform into the Black Knight to defend herself. Before she can apprehend the gunmen, a portal opens up and sucks Peyton into Wonderland.
Peyton finds a nearby castle in ruins with Morgan Le Faye trapped under the debris. Peyton binds Morgan until she gets answers, and Morgan reluctantly explains Joselynn, the Jabberwocky’s daughter, is tearing through kings, queens, and kingdoms until she finds the spirit of her father and the source of the Jabberwocky’s power. When confronted, not even the Knights of Camelot are able to slow Joselynn down when she transforms into a giant monster on the rampage.
We continue the issue with a reunion, magic swords, and a battle in the park.
