Is It Good?
MIRACLE KINGDOM #2 is a light, wholesome, charming little mystery of the heavenly variety. In issue #1, we met Winston Donovan as he took assignments to help debunk faith charlatans in all their forms. Now, we see Donovan is much more than an investigator, and even Heaven can’t help him when mysterious miracles take place.
When last we left Winston Donovan, his assignments crossed paths with a mysterious faith healer named Lester Benny. Despite all outward appearances, Benny appeared to be legit. Now, Donovan pays a visit to the home office to find out how a mortal could be performing unsanctioned miracles.
The highlight of McCarthy’s script is the light, cheery atmosphere enveloping a quaint mystery. It feels like you’re reading the comic equivalent of a Hallmark Television movie with all the soft lighting, good feelings, and pleasantness you can imagine. In a Comics Industry overrun with doom, gloom, violence, and misery, this issue is a refreshing change of pace.
The minor down point of the issue is the incomplete setup for the mystery at hand. Donovan goes through all the required channels and paperwork to learn that something is amiss, but it seems odd that Heaven, under the omniscient eye of the Almighty, would make a mistake or keep secrets from its own workers. Looking at it another way, the rules of Heaven operates is not fully spelled out, so you’re not quite sure how a mistake could be made or even what qualifies as a mistake. A little more world-building would be helpful.
How’s the art? It’s clean, bright, cheery, and pleasant, which is exactly how this type of story needs to be presented. Gonzales’s figure work and lines are super-clean. And Ansori’s colors are perfect for a Heavenly setting.

Check out our MIRACLE KINGDOM #1 review to find out how Donovan’s first meeting with Lester Benny turned out.
We begin with Winston Donovan arriving at the Heavenly Gates for a little research. Donovan asks his cherubic assistant, Digby, to pull all the files related to Lester Benny’s healing miracles and the history of Lester Benny’s church. Digby’s research leads to a startling conclusion – Benny’s miracles appear to be true, they’re authorized by an anonymous source, and Benny’s record is wiped clean.
When Donovan reports his findings, he receives permission to conduct an audit, a risky endeavor that risks exposing angels to humanity. We conclude the issue with a mother’s love, a shady meeting, and pastoral business.
