Is It Good?
MAN GOAT & THE BUNNYMAN 2023 SPRING SPECIAL is a wild, action-packed adventure from start to finish. Joe Brusha’s story about a nefarious collector adds to the cryptid lore, expands Floyd and Phil’s canon, and sets up exciting challenges for the boys in the future.
If you’re new to the Man Goat & The Bunnyman comics, it’s, admittedly, a weird series. Imagine a pair of pals, who happen to be cryptids, who use their network of friends andgovernment agencies to keep the peace between humans and the hidden world of monsters (Bigfoot, Chupacabra, etc.). Now, Floyd receives word his long-lost father is held by a mysterious billionaire intent on reuniting father and son, but all is not as it seems.
Joe Brusha strikes an interesting balance between surrealist fantasy and buddy-cop-style action. Floyd’s need to reunite with his father infuses plenty of emotional weight into the story. Phil’s no-nonsense, rakish personality gives the pair a tough-as-nails presence. And the action is way over-the-top with a hint of dark humor. Again, it’s weird, but somehow it works.
The (very) minor down point is the length of the comic. Brusha’s pacing is generally good, but some scenes stretch out a little too long. You’re getting your money’s worth for a 48-page comic, but this issue could have easily been trimmed to 32 pages.
Considering the subject matter and the character designs, Guillermo Fajardo’s art is outstanding. How do you make a 5-foot-something Bunnyman seem real and relatable? Unknown, but Farjardo pulls it off with gusto. The figure work is outstanding, the action is top-tier, and Pereyra’s coloring work is, likewise, outstanding.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with super-wealthy and super-elite partygoers attending a party at a mansion. This is no ordinary party, and the main attraction is a menagerie of caged cryptids who are auctioned for private meetings. One of the cryptids is Floyd the Bunnyman’s father.
One of the attendees approaches the host with a special offer. He wants to buy Floyd’s father for a hefty price, and he’s willing to deliver Floyd and Phil to the host as a bonus.
Later, Phil receives a mysterious email with an introduction, an offer to meet, and a picture of Floyd’s father in a cage. Phil smells a trap, but the two agree to meet at an estate in the middle of nowhere. Floyd and Phil soon learn the mysterious billionaire has a history with cryptids, and that history includes the death of his father.
We conclude the issue with unlikely cellmates, a role reversal, and a ritual.
