Is It Good?
Hang on to your hats, Gentle Reader, because LOVECRAFT: UNKNOWN KADATH #7 is going to war. Florentino Flórez enters the next phase of H.P. Lovecraft’s story where Carter and Cat arrive at Leng but take a brief detour to save Pickman and his ghoul friends from the evil pirates and toad beasts of the Moon. But for a brief recap explaining how Carter got from the last issue to this issue, LOVECRAFT: UNKNOWN KADATH #7 is an all-out battle between humans, cats, ghouls, pirates, toad beasts, and faceless vermin. It’s a sure bet you haven’t seen anything like it in comic form.
Florentino Flórez’s adaptation of Lovecraft’s source material is a remarkably accurate distillation of the prose. Carter’s approach to Leng is depicted in foreboding detail. Pickman’s torture is represented gruesomely. And the big battle recreates Lovecraft’s vision down to the last sword swing.
To date, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath has never been translated into film, but this issue is as close as you can get, and it’s a winner.
Give credit to Guillermo Sanna for creating a first-rate battle between loathsome armies of beasts from the Dream World. The fighting is intense, the deaths are bloody, and Sanna’s panel compositions maximize the drama in every part of the skirmish. Extra credit is due to Jacques Salomon for the earthy colors and moody shading that give the battle a grounded feel.

Check out our LOVECRAFT: UNKNOWN KADATH #6 review to find out what happened when Carter encountered the demon-eyed merchant.
We begin with Carter waking up from a blow to the head. Cat explains Carter was knocked unconscious after a fight with the merchant just after the merchant fell into a bottomless well. Now that Carter is awake, he and Cat decide to explore their surroundings. Carter soon realizes he has finally arrived at the gates of Leng.
Before Carter proceeds past the gates, he catches a glimpse of a nearby bonfire on the shore. When Carter investigates, he finds Pickman and the ghouls bound by the malignant Moon pirates while the toad beast stands guard. Bound to repay Pickman’s kindness, Carter ventures into one of the entrances to the Ghouls’ realm to get help.
We conclude the issue with a secret signal, a rescue, and a payback.
