Is It Good?
LOVECRAFT: UNKNOWN KADATH #6 is the point in Lovecraft’s seminal work that reminds readers, through Randolph Carter, that it pays to be careful what you wish for. Through Florentino Flórez’s pitch-perfect script adaptation and Jacques Salomon’s creepy, immersive art, Randolph Carter is confronted with the enormity of what he seeks, and he is afraid.
Fear is the element that makes this issue a winner in a consistently excellent adaptation of Lovecraft’s story. Up to this point, Randolph Carter presents as a man undeterred by warnings, dangerous encounters, and disasters in his quest to find Kadath. Now, when Carter is close to his goal, the sentinels of Leng show Carter a taste of what he might face in his quest to find the gods, and nothing could be more terrifying to mortal eyes.
Flórez successfully flips Carter’s unflappable confidence into a state of abject fear. You can hear the uncertainty and panic in Carter’s words, and you can see the look of dumbstruck terror on his face through Salomon’s creepy, shadowy art. Up to now, this arc has largely leaned on the fantasy elements, but it’s in this issue where we feel the full weight of supernatural elements that ought not to be disturbed.
Extra kudos are due to Jacques Salomon for tackling one of the most difficult tasks in a Lovecraft adaptation – creating a visual representation of the sentinels of Leng. The sentinels are not so esoteric that you can understand what you’re seeing, but they’re surreal enough to allow the reader to relate to what Carter must be thinking and feeling when he realizes the monstrous shapes are within reach.

What’s It About?

Check out our LOVECRAFT: UNKNOWN KADATH #5 review to find out how Randolph carter made the long trip to Leng with the help of the Inquanok.
We begin with Randolph Carter and his cat companion raiding along the rocky cliffs of a yak in pursuit of the merchant who sold Carter to the slave traders at Dylath-Leen. The merchant has a reputation among the inhabitants of Inquanok for selling Shantak bird eggs, so he must know the way to the Leng Plateau.
Carter and cat follow as quickly as their yak can manage, but eventually, the yak senses the dark presence they approach and runs off. Determined to catch up with the merchant, Carter and cat soon find the fabled Great Onyx Quarry that contains the stones used to construct the palace at Kadath. Proceeding further, Carter and cat find themselves staring into the cold wastes and the great, open spaces of the Leng Plateau.
Beset by whipping winds and the darkness of nightfall, Carter looks into the near distance and sees a shape illuminated by the lightning of an approaching storm. We conclude the issue with that which human eyes should not see, a reunion, and an unexpected flight.
