Analysis of LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #2:
Plot Analysis:
When last we left Jojo, the world’s most optimistic robot cabbie, in issue #1, he was shocked to hit it off with a pretty customer, Gilda, who liked the same things he did. Jojo asked Gilda on a date, hoping the last piece of his life, finding someone to love, had finally come true. Unfortunately, getting stood up put Jojo’s endless optimism to the test.
LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #2, the ever-positive Jojo sinks into a depression that lasts weeks. His plants are dying, his cat is poorly fed, and the only sound coming from his apartment is the regular sound of a running vacuum. Until…
Jojo receives a frantic call from Gilda asking for help. She begs him to come to Alfio’s before the connection is lost. Unfamiliar with the name, Jojo gives his friend, Wizard, a call. When Jojo explains all he knows, Wizard warns him to stay away from the situation.
Alfio’s is a restaurant that acts as the regular meeting place for the Polpette mafia family, run by the scar-faced Boss Alfonso. Wizard also knows Gilda is the mafia family’s lawyer, and Alfonso’s bloodthirsty killer of a son, Carmelo, is madly in love with Gilda. Jojo should give up on Gilda and anything to do with her situation.
So, Jojo goes to Alfio’s and asks where to find Gilda. Carmelo is there with his mafioso henchmen, and he tells Jojo to leave. Jojo refuses. What follows is a beatdown of epic proportions… for Carmelo and his men.
Character Development:
Just because a robot cabbie is happy-go-lucky and endlessly optimistic doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to beat down a thug or two or twelve when he needs to. Despite the oddity of his circumstance as a robot cabbie, he’s an instantly likable character, and this issue elevated his likability times ten.
Artwork and Presentation:
Stefano Cardoselli’s art style is an unusual mix between Frank Miller and Berkeley Breathed. If that doesn’t float your boat, we always extol the positives of an art style that can convey story and emotion. Regardless of the technical cleanliness, Cardoselli is a master at conveying visual story and emotion.

Pacing and Structure:
LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #2 is a 32-page comic, but it’s a super-fast read that breaks down into effectively three scenes. To be clear, not a single panel is wasted, and the plot never approaches anything resembling rushed. Therefore, Perillo tells you just enough to flesh out the story and keep the scenes moving, and Cardoselli packs importance into every panel to ensure maximum output in the shortest amount of time without losing any meaning.
Thematic Exploration:
As with the first issue, LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #2 focuses on Hope. In the first issue, Jojo has hope that he might have found the love missing from his life. Here, the hope lost at the end of issue #1 is rekindled and enflamed when he realizes external forces are responsible for his lost date.

LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #2 is a super-quick read but a powerhouse of action, heart, and energy. Perillo’s script is a masterclass on delivering efficient engagement, and Cardoselli’s artwork gives you a protagonist you can believe in.
