Is LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #1 Good?

Only Stefano Cardoselli’s stylistic art with a heart of gold could get readers to care so much about a robot. LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #1 is an unexpected charmer of a tale that puts a lovelorn taxi driver at the heart of a romance tale set in a crusty cynical, futuristic world, which makes his hopeless optimism all the more endearing.

LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #1 centers on one of the first robot taxi drivers in the city, Jojo, who lives day-to-day with a spring in his step, a love for Nina Simone music, his cynically-minded cat, and a city overrun with billboards, neon, trash, and the unwashed masses. The only thing missing from Jojo’s life is somebody to notice and care about him.

One day, Jojo picks up a fare who turns out to be the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. She has a smile that lights up the world, a love for old movies, and an appreciation for Nina Simone. After an unexpectedly quick chat brimming with chemistry, they agree to catch a movie that night.

However, Jojo soon learns that romance is never easy.

What’s great about LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #1? Francesca Perillo grabs you by the heartstrings with a script that bristles with heart, sweetness, and charm. You can’t help but fall in love with Jojo right from panel #1 with his sunny outlook on life, which immediately puts you in the frame of mind to find love.

What’s not so great about LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #1? The almost minor nitpick is the lack of clarity concerning the narrator. By the end, you could presume that the story is told by Jojo’s cat, but the owner’s voice could have been made more clear earlier.

How’s the art? The Success of this issue is due in large part to Stefano Cardoselli’s eye for using exaggeration of character, space, and design to convey mood. Cardoselli’s style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it fits the story brilliantly.

Final Thoughts

LOVE ME: A ROMANCE STORY #1 is a supremely surreal romance tale about a super optimistic robot who finally finds the girl of his dreams. The characters and setting are ripped from a brightly dystopian future, but the budding romance story is as old as Time.

Score: 9.5/10
