Was It Good?
LOST MAGIC, SEASON 1 is brimming… nay, overflowing with imaginative ideas. Nasim has assembled a team of creators to flesh out a mystical world at war with itself over magic and the right to live without it. That said, the world may be impenetrable if you’re going in cold, simply because the creators try to get too many ideas out as disconnected pieces all at once with the promise of bringing them all together later.
In this 30+ page first season, readers experience eight different vignettes showing pieces of the world from eight completely different (and disconnected) time periods, locations, and character perspectives. On the one hand, it’s a strong way to introduce each character with a mini-story to tell you what affects them or drives them to move in a particular direction. On the other, there’s almost nothing that connects the vignettes. In short, the comic lacks a clear sense of plot and focus.
In fairness, the vignettes have a dreamy quality within an expansive world. You get the impression Nasim has a massive world in his head and can visualize every nook and cranny. The world is there, the characters are there. What’s needed is a cleaner, simple way to bring the new reader into this world.
Depending on your artistic tastes, the art team gets the job done. Muñoz has a solid eye for character design and panel composition. However, the sketchy, “abstract” style comes at the cost of clarity, and it’s sometimes difficult to get a handle on what a character is supposed to look like.
The secondary challenge with the art comes via the lettering. In multiple vignettes, the story is told by a narrator in caption boxes with color-coding. sometimes the narrator is in the panel, sometimes not, and it wasn’t always clear in a crowded character panel who was the narrator.
We don’t want to sound down on the book. It has a lot of promise, and there are gobs of imagination waiting to come out. Where the issue falls short is in the areas of skill and clarity. If the creators can work to improve in subsequent seasons, the potential for something great is there. Consider this a diamond in the rough.

To be blunt, there’s too much going on to summarize. Instead, we’ll simply provide an excerpt in the creator’s own words.
“What if I told you all the stories you’ve ever heard of monsters are real?
They just belong to another world — inexplicably connected to Earth.
Every now and then, a portal opens allowing their inhabitants to cross over.
This story resides in this lost world. At a time when magic is dying.
No one knows why.
Heroes of all ages must solve this mystery amongst the stars.
A King rises to build the first civilization. One without magic.
A Rebellion looms to keep the chaos and power the way it’s always been.
Decisions are all we have.
Which side will you join?”

Final Thoughts
LOST MAGIC, SEASON 1 is a vast, imaginative world containing a small army of characters who play a part to further monsters and magic or see them stamped out forever. The unending stream of ideas gives readers plenty to think about, but the rough art and lack of anything approaching a complete story (or at least a complete first season) make this issue somewhat impenetrable.
