Is It Good?
Well, this is interesting. LOST BETWEEN WORLDS #1 is the latest indie offering from Edwin Jose De Castro about an affable Grim Reaper named Gwynn who comes to collect a soul who might just break the system. Stories about the process of death from the Grim Reaper’s point of view are not new, but there’s enough quirk, attitude, and charm to set this comic apart from the rest.
The highlight of Edwin Jose De Castro’s script is the worldly and likable protagonist, Gwynn. It’s unclear how long Gwynn has collected souls, but she has enough experience to rarely be surprised by anything the recently departed would try to keep from moving on. She’s confident and comfortable in her work, which gives her a relaxed charm that puts the souls she collects and the reader at ease. It’s no easy task to make Death sem likable, so on that point, Edwin Jose De Castro deserves well-earned kudos.
LOST BETWEEN WORLDS #1 is the first issue in an arc, so it’s too early to tell how well the story shapes up. Most of the pages are devoted to getting to know Gwynn and laying out the early stages of the conflict to come. Since so much time is devoted to introductions and setup, some readers may feel this first issue doesn’t have much meat on its bones, but the setup is entertaining enough to hold your interest and raise enough curiosity to want to know what happens next.
The art by Elton Thomasi Dias, Maclej Radwański, and Diego Do Nascimento Lima is pretty darn good. The art quality is well above-average for an indie comic and a bit better than some comics we’ve seen come out from mid-sized publishers in the last year. The lines are clean, the figure work is excellent, and the colors pop, so on art alone, readers will get their money’s worth.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with an introduction to Gwynn, a Grim Reaper listening to a concert while she waits for her next assignment. Unfortunately for the band, they ARE Gwynn’s next assignment.
Later, Gwynn laments an exceptionally long and busy day of soul-collecting when she receives what she hopes will be the last assignment of the day. Gwynn enters the home of a sleeping man, but before she delivers the killing blow, Gwynn discovers something isn’t right about her ledger. The man’s name doesn’t match the assignment. When the man wakes up and learns what’s happening, he and Gwynn settle on a chat to work out the discrepancy.
We conclude the issue with a potential loophole, a request to speak to the manager, and a forewarning of terrible things to come.

LOST BETWEEN WORLDS #1 is a quirky, charming take on Grim Reapers with a setup issue that spells potential doom for Earth. The protagonist is oddly likable (as likable as you can get for Death), the artwork is well above-average for an indie book, and the story has potential.
