Is It Good?
Dang! Almost nailed it! Almost. LORD OF THE JUNGLE #6 concludes the pitch-perfect Tarzan series with captivating personalities, rough and gritty brawls, and swinging adventures. If not for one glaring plot hole, this would be a perfect miniseries.
When last we left Tarzan, he escaped the museum with the jewels he borrowed many years ago and completed the long trek to return them to the Valley of the Mists. Unfortunately, Bouanga was caught in the museum break-in. Now, Tarzan returns the jewels in the present while remembering how Shaw broke his promise to free the apes in the past after receiving the jewels, leading to a fight on multiple fronts and multiple times.
Oh! Mama Mia Pizzeria! If not for one glaring plot hole, this would be a perfect ending. Jurgens gives you everything you want out of a Tarzan finale heroic feats from a hero with an unshakeable moral center, bare-knuckled fights, jungle surprises, and a thoughtful ending.
What is the big plot hole? Shaw goes back on his word (no surprise there), and Tarzan defeats him after a brutal fight, but for some inexplicable reason, Tarzan lets Shaw leave with the jewels. Why. WHY?!? If we’re misreading the issue, help would be appreciated, but the way this issue follows, Tarzan beats Shaw and lets him go with the jewels after breaking his agreement. A single caption explains the jewels are hidden in a bag, but Tarzan never thought to ask for them back. If Shaw hid them, shouldn’t somebody have questioned Shaw? Oy!
How’s the art? It’s phenomenal. Benito Gallego is the catch of the decade for this run because his style reflects the strong, dramatic, dynamic personality of Bronze Age comics. The characters and action look great, so we couldn’t be happier with Gallego’s work on this series.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our LORD OF THE JUNGLE #5 review to find out what Tarzan had to endure to make it back to the Valley of the Mists.
We begin with 1950s Tarzan returning the jewels to their rightful place in the Valley of the Mists. The current ruler isn’t pleased with how Tarzan acquired the jewels in the first place, but Tarzan’s explanation is one of noble intentions.
In the past, Shaw gloats over the jewels after “killing” Tarzan. In his haste to get the crew loaded on his ship back to England, Shaw orders the captured apes killed. Carson demands Shaw keep his word, but Bouanga and Carson are powerless to stop the slaughter. Before the deed is done, an enraged Tarzan, only grazed by the bullet, unleashes all his fury on Shaw and his men.
We conclude the issue with mercy, a beautiful new arrival, and a prison break.

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #6 delivers a near-perfect ending to a pitch-perfect Tarzan series. Jurgens captures the spirit of heroism and adventure for one of Pulp’s most famous heroes, and Gallego’s art is stellar. But for one glaring plot hole, this would be a perfect finale.
