Is It Good?
THE LIVING CORPSE: THE HEXX FILES (ONE-SHOT) is an FCBD 2023 pickup from the creators of The Living Corpse series and famed comic creator David Michelinie. This time, the Corpse Crew partners John Romero, aka The Living Corpse, with a new hero on a mission to save his own soul or die trying.
Michelinie’s script introduces the world to McGavin “Mac” Hexx, a private dick who lost his soul years ago while breaking up a supernatural cult. Now, Hexx uses his ectoplasmic powers and detective skills to help wayward ghosts ad stop supernatural threats. When Romero and Hexx cross paths after a teenager’s summoning ritual goes wrong, the two join forces to stop a monster of Lovecraftian proportions.
If you’re a Living Corpse fan or a fan of supernatural action comics in general, the above description tells you all you need to know. For everyone else, this is a fun comic. Michelinie puts the lion’s share of focus on telling Hexx’s origin story and demonstrating how his powers work, so Romero doesn’t come in until it’s time for the big battle.
Hexx’s setup is perfectly crafted, with a unique pulp vibe. The pacing, dialog, and plot work well. Michelinie’s choice to make a Hexx a pulp-inspired character adds a new twist to The Living Corpse canon that gives the series a fresh feel without disrupting what makes The Living Corpse special. And the Cthulu-ish cameo sparks anticipation for the possibility of more Lovecraft horrors in the future.
How’s the art? Perfect. Of course, Haeser, Hasson, and Smith have stuck with The Living Corpse for years, so nobody knows Romero like they know Romero. The pencils/inks are impressively detailed, the character designs are cool, and Smith’s coloring is outstanding. As a bonus, this one-shot contains creator notes on how they came up with Hexx’s design, and you get a copy of Michelinie’s script. If you’re the type of collector who likes BTS material, this issue is a must-have.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a ravenous ghoul dragging a fresh corpse out of the grave for a fresh meal in a New Orleans cemetery. Before the ghoul can take its first bite, it’s blasted to mush by ectoplasmic bullets fired by the guns of one McGavin “Mac” Hexx.
We learn through a flashback that Hexx was a private detective who lost his soul during a botched cult raid. Now, he uses his ectoplasmic to help the dead and stop monsters until he can find a way to get his soul back. Before Hexx leaves the cemetery, he notices a strange light coming from a nearby clearing. A group of teenagers is recklessly casting a spell to summon the Great Old Ones to do their bidding. The ritual works better than the teens bargained for.
We conclude the issue with two heroes responding to trouble, a team-up, and a parent with a foreboding warning.
