KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN SUN #10 Review

Posted on February 10, 2021

In KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN SUN #10, available from Mad Cave Studios on February 10th, 2021, Camiel arrives on Earth to find her sister, the Angel of Death. When she learns of her sister’s fate, the Archangels split up to find the remaining artifacts needed to stop Metatron.

The Details

Was It Good?

Yes. London takes the reader on a grand tour of sites with Biblical significance wrapped in a completely original tale with drama and layered meaning for the characters. Villarreal’s art practically glows on the page. There’s no comic out right now with this combination of gorgeous art and expert storytelling.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

Camiel shrugs off her human resistance from the last issue (read our Knights of the Golden Sun #9 review here) and is confronted by Ishbaal and the Archangels. They explain how Azrael became corrupted after the Fall, and in her zeal to take power in God’s absence, she created abominations such as Metatron to enforce her will. Michael had no choice but to kill her.

Saddened by her sister’s loss but realizing Metatron is now the true threat, Camiel agrees to help the other Archangels find the remaining artifacts. Michael, Uriel, and Camiel head to the Red Sea with not much intel beyond a location.

During their trip, Uriel and Camiel bicker ceaselessly. It’s clear there’s some bad blood between the two over how they last parted ways. What’s so strong about London’s writing here is the amount of “human” authenticity he infuses in these celestial beings. There’s no archaic use of “thees” and “thous” to make it seem the Archangels are antiquated. Despite the origins of the Archangels, they have their relationship problems just like anyone else.

The trio reaches the edge of the Red Sea, and Michael takes a chance on moving forward by striking the water with his sword. A golden path lights up across the water, and the trio follows based on blind faith.

When they reach the edge in the middle of nowhere, a tentacled water witch rises from the water with her minions. She strikes Uriel and drags her under while the minions hold Michael and Camiel.

At this point, we get a deep (no pun intended) scene of self-reflection as the witch forces Uriel to face her own anger or forfeit her life. Uriel relives a memory of a conversation she has with Lucifer before the Fall where he pushes her to choose sides in the coming war.

London really latches on to the feelings of doubt, confusion, and regret when it comes to making difficult choices. Uriel is forced into facing the personal pain of her choice and how that decision has affected her ever since. Will Uriel come to terms with her past before it’s too late? We’ll leave that for our intrepid readers to find out.

Final Thoughts

KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN SUN #10, available from Mad Cave Studios on February 10th, 2021, is filled with rich art and richer storytelling. This reviewer is keenly interested to see where the story goes next.
